Overview
Balau wood is one of Malaysia’s most dependable outdoor timber species and a popular choice for furniture and structural applications that need to withstand Johor Bahru’s tropical climate. Part of the Shorea genus, Balau encompasses several closely related species including Red Balau and Yellow Balau, both classified as heavy to very heavy hardwoods with good to excellent natural durability. In terms of outdoor furniture performance, Balau sits alongside Chengal as one of the two best local timber choices, offering very good moisture and rot resistance at a price that is often somewhat more accessible than premium Chengal. For outdoor dining tables, benches, garden chairs, decking and structural garden elements, Balau is a trusted material with a long track record in Malaysia. This guide covers the key properties of Balau, how it compares to Chengal and Teak, what furniture and applications it is best suited for, and how to get the most from it through proper care.

Key Features
- Excellent outdoor durability. Balau’s density and natural compounds give it very good resistance to moisture, rot and biological attack, making it well suited to outdoor furniture in Johor Bahru’s climate.
- Cost-effective alternative to Chengal. Where Chengal is the absolute premium choice, Balau offers comparable performance in most outdoor furniture applications at a generally lower cost, making it a practical choice for larger projects.
- Strong and stable. Balau’s hardness makes it resistant to surface denting and wear, and properly dried Balau is dimensionally stable in changing humidity conditions.
- Versatile applications. Balau is equally at home as furniture timber, decking, fencing, bridges and structural garden elements, making it a one-stop material for coordinated outdoor projects.
- Anti-slip surface for decking. Anti-slip grooved Balau decking boards are a popular application for pool decks, walkways and terraces where a safe, durable surface is needed.
- Natural warm colour. Freshly finished Balau has a warm golden to reddish-brown colour that looks attractive in garden settings, and weathers gracefully to a silver-grey if left untreated.
Customization Options & Wood Specs
Balau’s key characteristic for outdoor furniture is its combination of density and durability. At 830–1,050 kg/m³ depending on species, it is heavier than Teak and most imported furniture timbers, giving outdoor pieces made from Balau good natural stability in wind and a solid, quality feel. The density also contributes to surface hardness, which means dining table tops and chair seats made from Balau resist dents and scratches from outdoor use better than lighter timbers.
One practical consideration with Balau is that it has a more open grain than Chengal in some specimens, which means it absorbs exterior oil treatments readily and benefits from a generous initial oiling. On the positive side, this also means stain colours penetrate well and evenly, making it easy to achieve a consistent tinted finish if you want the furniture to match a specific colour palette. Balau is also well established as a decking timber, and coordinating a Balau deck with Balau outdoor furniture creates a cohesive, natural outdoor space.
- Furniture: Outdoor dining tables, chairs, benches, lounge furniture
- Structural: Decking, pergolas, fencing and bridges
- Finish: Natural oil, tinted stain or natural weathering
- Anti-slip decking: Grooved boards for pool decks and walkways
Our Process
A Balau furniture commission follows the same process as other custom hardwood work. We start with a discussion of the pieces you need, the dimensions of your outdoor space and the level of sun and rain exposure the furniture will face, which helps confirm whether Balau or Chengal is the right choice. We then prepare a quotation.
Fabrication takes place in our Masai workshop, using quality joinery and stainless steel fixings designed for the outdoor environment. The finished pieces are delivered to your home in Johor Bahru or the wider Johor area, and we provide care guidance to get the best long-term performance from the timber.
Care & Maintenance
Balau outdoor furniture benefits from an initial oiling with quality exterior hardwood oil on delivery, and then annual oiling thereafter to maintain the colour and surface protection. Clean with soapy water and a soft brush two or three times a year, rinse and dry before re-oiling. Check fixings annually and tighten as needed.
If Balau furniture is left without oil, it weathers to a silver-grey colour similar to Chengal, which is a natural and attractive outcome. The structural integrity is not affected by this surface change. If you want to restore the warm colour at any stage, sand lightly with fine-grit paper and apply exterior oil. Balau decking should be cleaned and oiled on the same schedule, with anti-slip grooves cleared of debris to maintain traction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Balau as good as Chengal for outdoor furniture?
Balau and Chengal are both excellent choices for outdoor furniture in Malaysia. Chengal has a slightly higher durability rating (Class 1 throughout) and is denser on average, making it the premium choice for fully exposed positions. Balau is excellent for most outdoor furniture applications and typically costs a little less.
What is the difference between Red Balau and Yellow Balau?
Red Balau (Shorea maxwelliana and related species) has a reddish-brown colour and tends to be at the denser end of the Balau range. Yellow Balau (Shorea faguetiana and related species) is slightly lighter in colour and marginally less dense, but both are classified as durable hardwoods suitable for outdoor use.
Can Balau be used for decking?
Yes. Balau is one of the most popular decking timbers in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Anti-slip grooved Balau decking boards are widely used for pool decks, garden walkways and covered terraces. We supply and install Balau decking alongside outdoor furniture.
How long does Balau outdoor furniture last?
With good maintenance, Balau outdoor furniture in Malaysia’s climate lasts twenty to thirty years and often longer. Its density and natural durability make it a long-term investment that significantly outlasts aluminium, rattan or softwood outdoor furniture.
