Overview
Chengal wood furniture is widely regarded as the gold standard for high-quality hardwood furniture in Malaysia, and with good reason. Chengal (Neobalanocarpus heimii) is one of the densest and most naturally durable timber species found in the Malaysian rainforest, classified as a very heavy hardwood with exceptional resistance to decay, moisture and insects. These properties, combined with a beautiful straight grain and warm golden-brown colour, make it the preferred choice for furniture that needs to last for generations. Whether used for an indoor dining table, a built-in kitchen counter, outdoor garden furniture, or structural timber works such as decking and fencing, Chengal is the timber professionals and knowledgeable homeowners in Johor Bahru reach for when they want the best. This guide covers the key properties of Chengal, why it is superior for both indoor and outdoor furniture in Malaysia, what to expect from a Chengal furniture commission, and how to care for Chengal pieces over their very long lifespan.

Key Features
- Class 1 natural durability. Chengal is classified as the highest durability rating for natural timber, meaning it can be used outdoors without preservative treatment and still last for decades.
- Exceptional hardness. Its Janka hardness rating means it resists denting, surface scratching and wear far better than most furniture timbers, making it ideal for dining tables, counters and outdoor furniture that takes heavy daily use.
- Natural termite resistance. This is critical for any outdoor timber in Johor Bahru. Chengal’s dense cell structure and natural compounds resist termite attack without chemical treatment.
- Dimensionally stable. Once properly dried and seasoned, Chengal moves very little in response to humidity changes, which is a significant advantage in Malaysia’s climate.
- Beautiful grain and colour. The interlocked grain produces an attractive figuring when the timber is sawn, and the warm golden-brown colour develops further depth over time.
- Extremely long lifespan. Chengal structural timbers in traditional Malay buildings have been documented lasting over a century. Furniture made from quality Chengal, properly maintained, will outlast its owner.
Customization Options & Wood Specs
Chengal’s density is both its greatest strength and the reason it costs more than other hardwoods. At around 900–1,050 kg/m³, it is significantly heavier than Teak (around 640–700 kg/m³) and most other furniture timbers, which means it takes longer to work, requires sharper tooling and adds considerable weight to finished pieces. A Chengal dining table is noticeably heavier than a similar table in Mahogany, but this weight is a direct expression of the timber’s density and durability.
For furniture use, Chengal is most commonly specified for outdoor dining tables and chairs, garden benches, pool-deck furniture, and structural outdoor applications. It is also used for indoor pieces where longevity is the priority — dining tables, kitchen counters and feature walls where a premium natural material is desired. The grain is typically straight to slightly interlocked, producing a relatively uniform appearance that suits both traditional and contemporary furniture design.
- Indoor use: Dining tables, kitchen counters, desks and feature pieces
- Outdoor use: Garden furniture, benches, pool decks and pergola structures
- Finish: Natural oil, exterior stain, penetrating sealant or left to weather
- Availability: Available in a range of sizes; larger slabs for live-edge commissions on request
Our Process
Every Chengal furniture commission starts with a consultation about the piece, its intended location and how it will be used. Chengal’s density and weight have design implications — for example, a large outdoor dining table needs robust joinery and correct leg sizing to handle the weight of the top — and we factor these into the design from the start.
We source quality Chengal timber, select boards with the appropriate grain and dimension for your piece, and machine and hand-finish in our Masai workshop. Lead time for Chengal pieces is typically three to six weeks. The finished piece is delivered and positioned in your home or garden, and we provide care instructions specific to the finish applied.
Care & Maintenance
For indoor Chengal furniture, dust regularly and clean with a slightly damp cloth. Re-oil with a quality furniture oil once or twice a year to maintain the lustre and depth of the grain. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight and use coasters and mats to protect the surface from heat and moisture.
For outdoor Chengal furniture, clean with soapy water and a soft brush two or three times a year, dry thoroughly and re-oil with exterior hardwood oil annually. Chengal left without oil will silver gracefully, losing its warm colour but not its structural integrity. Re-oiling at any stage restores much of the original tone. Chengal’s natural durability means it does not require chemical treatment to last outdoors in Malaysia, making it an environmentally responsible choice as well as a beautiful one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chengal the best wood for outdoor furniture in Malaysia?
Chengal is widely considered the best wood for outdoor furniture in Malaysia due to its Class 1 natural durability rating, very high density and natural resistance to moisture, rot and termites. It genuinely does not need chemical treatment to last outdoors in tropical conditions.
How heavy is Chengal furniture?
Very heavy. A solid Chengal dining table of 200 x 100 cm can weigh 60–80 kg or more depending on top thickness. This weight is a direct expression of its density and durability. Outdoor garden furniture in Chengal also stays firmly in place in strong winds.
How does Chengal compare to Teak?
Chengal is denser and harder than Teak and is generally considered more durable in the specific context of the Malaysian tropical outdoor environment. Teak is an internationally recognised benchmark timber, while Chengal is Malaysia’s own equivalent, often at a more competitive price locally.
How long does Chengal furniture last?
When properly made and maintained, Chengal furniture lasts for decades. Structural Chengal timber in traditional Malaysian buildings has been found to remain sound after more than a century of use. For furniture, a realistic expectation is thirty to fifty years or more with normal care.
