Overview
Teak wood furniture has been an international benchmark for quality hardwood since European traders and naval architects discovered its exceptional properties in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Tectona grandis — the timber most people know as Teak — contains natural silica and oils that give it excellent weather resistance, dimensional stability and a smooth working surface that has made it the timber of choice for ship decks, outdoor furniture and fine indoor pieces around the world. In Malaysia and Johor Bahru, Teak competes with local species like Chengal and Balau, and while the local timbers are often denser and more naturally durable in strictly tropical outdoor conditions, Teak’s beautiful grain, warm colour and international reputation make it a popular choice for indoor dining furniture, bedroom furniture and high-quality outdoor pieces. This guide covers Teak’s properties, the types of furniture it is best used for in Johor Bahru, and how to maintain Teak pieces in the local climate.

Key Features
- Natural oils for self-protection. Teak contains natural oils and resins that make it inherently resistant to moisture and water ingress, reducing the maintenance needed compared with some other hardwoods.
- Beautiful grain and colour. Teak’s straight grain and warm honey-to-golden-brown colour make it one of the most aesthetically attractive furniture timbers in the world, aging gracefully to a deeper tone over time.
- Dimensionally stable. Teak moves very little with changes in humidity, making it reliable for furniture where tight joints and flat surfaces need to be maintained over years of use.
- Hard enough for daily use. While less dense than Chengal or Balau, Teak is hard enough to resist everyday wear on dining tables, benches and outdoor furniture.
- Internationally recognised quality mark. Teak is understood globally as a premium timber, which gives Teak furniture a universally appreciated prestige.
- Versatile across indoor and outdoor applications. The same timber performs well in an indoor dining room and on an outdoor patio, making it ideal for open-plan spaces that transition between inside and outside.
Customization Options & Wood Specs
Teak occupies a middle ground between the extreme density of Chengal and Balau and the lighter furniture timbers like Mahogany. This makes it very workable — it machines and finishes cleanly — while still offering good durability. For indoor furniture such as dining tables, bedroom pieces and sideboards, Teak is an excellent primary material, and its natural oils mean that an oil finish rather than a film-forming varnish is often the ideal treatment, allowing the wood to breathe and the grain to be showcased.
For outdoor use in Johor Bahru, Teak performs well in covered or semi-covered outdoor settings — covered patios, verandahs and shaded garden areas. In fully exposed outdoor settings under the intense Malaysian sun and monsoon rain, Chengal and Balau have higher natural durability ratings and are generally recommended over Teak. However, Teak with proper exterior oil maintenance will serve well in outdoor settings for many years. Teak oil — a specific exterior treatment — is widely available and easy to apply, making maintenance accessible even for first-time furniture owners.
- Indoor furniture: Dining tables, chairs, bedroom furniture, sideboards
- Outdoor furniture: Garden dining sets, benches, loungers (particularly in covered settings)
- Finish: Teak oil (indoor/outdoor), varnish (indoor), natural weathering (outdoor)
- Grain: Straight to slightly wavy, fine to medium texture
Our Process
The consultation for a Teak furniture commission covers the intended use, location and finish preference. For indoor dining tables and bedroom furniture, we discuss grain character, dimensions and whether a live-edge or conventional slab top is wanted. For outdoor pieces, we discuss the level of shade and rain exposure, which informs whether Teak is the ideal choice or whether Chengal or Balau would serve better.
Fabrication in our Masai workshop uses hand-selected Teak with attention to grain consistency. The finished piece is inspected and delivered to your Johor Bahru home with care instructions specific to the finish applied.
Care & Maintenance
For indoor Teak furniture, clean with a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately. Apply Teak oil or a quality furniture oil every six to twelve months to nourish the timber and maintain its warm glow. Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight to prevent uneven fading, and use coasters and mats to protect the surface.
For outdoor Teak furniture, clean with soapy water and a soft brush, rinse and dry before re-applying Teak oil two or three times a year for fully exposed pieces, or once a year for covered outdoor settings. If the surface is allowed to weather to grey, this can be reversed with a light sanding and fresh oiling. Teak’s natural oils mean it weathers more gracefully than most timbers, even without treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Teak good for outdoor furniture in Malaysia?
Teak is a good choice for outdoor furniture in Malaysia, particularly in covered or semi-covered settings. For fully exposed outdoor positions in Johor Bahru’s intense sun and rain, Chengal and Balau have higher natural durability ratings and are generally recommended as the first choice.
What is Teak oil and does Teak furniture need it?
Teak oil is a penetrating exterior oil treatment that protects the surface, nourishes the timber and maintains the warm golden colour. Teak furniture does not strictly need oiling — it will weather without rotting — but oiling keeps the colour vibrant and the surface in better condition.
How does Teak compare to Chengal?
Chengal is denser and harder than Teak and has a higher natural durability rating in tropical outdoor conditions. Teak has a warmer colour and a more internationally recognised reputation. For outdoor furniture in Johor Bahru, Chengal and Balau are often the more practical local choice, while Teak excels for indoor and covered-outdoor pieces.
Can Teak furniture be used indoors?
Yes, and many people prefer Teak for indoor furniture because of its beautiful grain, warm colour and dimensional stability. Teak dining tables, chairs and bedroom furniture are a popular choice for homeowners who want a natural hardwood look inside the home.
