Overview: The Community Recreation Club in Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru’s established residential neighbourhoods — Taman Molek, Taman Gaya, Taman Pelangi, Taman Daya, Taman Universiti, Bukit Indah, Taman Austin, and the newer Iskandar Puteri developments — are served by residents’ associations (Persatuan Penduduk), JMB-managed community facilities, and private recreation clubs that maintain swimming pools, covered multipurpose halls, children’s playgrounds, and common garden areas for residents. The quality of these shared outdoor spaces significantly affects residents’ sense of community, property satisfaction, and the desirability of the neighbourhood to prospective homebuyers and renters.
Hardwood outdoor furniture — poolside benches and sun loungers, covered pavilion seating, BBQ area furniture, children’s area benches — creates a materially superior community environment compared to the plastic or painted steel furniture that dominates most Malaysian recreation club facilities. A neighbourhood that invests in quality hardwood common area furniture signals care and community pride that increases property values and resident satisfaction. At Oriental Allure Design, we supply custom hardwood furniture for residents’ associations, JMB facilities, private recreation clubs, and community facilities throughout Johor Bahru.

Products for Community Recreational Facilities
- Poolside Bench: The most important single piece of furniture for any community swimming pool — a solid hardwood bench at the pool edge or in the pool surround where members and parents wait, rest, and watch. Our poolside benches are fabricated in Chengal (maximum pool-chemical and UV resistance), with grooved anti-slip seats, stainless hardware throughout, and anchored to the pool deck with stainless base plates. Standard length 1,800 mm, seat height 430 mm, backless or with low backrest.
- Covered Pavilion Seating: The community pavilion (gazebo or covered seating structure) at the poolside or in the common garden area is a major social hub for residential communities. We supply solid hardwood bench seating for existing pavilion structures, or design and build complete hardwood pavilion structures with integrated seating for new installation. Pavilion seating in Merbau with a teak oil finish creates a warm, resort-style atmosphere in the community space.
- BBQ Area Furniture: Long communal picnic tables (typically 1,800–2,400 mm) with integrated bench seating on both sides — the classic BBQ party table format — in solid Merbau or Chengal. Designed for heavy use, easy cleaning, and outdoor durability. Can incorporate a cut-out for a portable gas BBQ unit or a fixed centre tile for a charcoal grill insert.
- Children’s Area Seating: Low benches (350 mm seat height) at the children’s playground for parents supervising play, and low activity tables for outdoor arts and crafts sessions. All edges rounded to 5 mm minimum radius for child safety; non-toxic water-based finish on all child-contact surfaces.
- Multipurpose Hall Furniture: Long folding or stackable hardwood tables and matching chairs for the community multipurpose hall — used for community meetings, kenduri, birthday parties, and cultural events. Designed for flexible use: stackable and foldable for storage, robust for heavy multi-user use, and attractive enough to create a quality impression at community events.
Swimming Pool & Poolside Furniture: Special Requirements
Swimming pool furniture in Malaysia faces one of the harshest material environments available to outdoor furniture: constant UV exposure, pool water splash (chlorinated), chlorine vapour in the air surrounding the pool deck, sunscreen and body oil residue from bathers, and regular pressure washing during pool maintenance. Only the highest-durability hardwood species — Chengal (Class 1) — should be specified for furniture in direct pool contact zones. Merbau (Class 2) is acceptable for furniture more than 3 metres from the pool edge that does not receive regular water splash. Hardware throughout must be 316-grade stainless — zinc-plated or galvanised hardware corrodes rapidly in chlorine environments. The finish system must be resistant to diluted chlorine solution cleaning — we specify a UV-resistant penetrating oil (not varnish) for pool furniture, as oil finishes can be maintained by top-coating without stripping, whereas varnish exposed to chlorine solution cleaning will eventually delaminate and require full strip and recoat.
Wood Species for Community Recreation Furniture
Chengal is non-negotiable for any furniture in direct pool contact zones — Class 1 natural durability with silica content that resists the combined attack of UV, chlorinated water splash, and pool chemical vapours better than any other Malaysian species. Merbau is the workhorse species for pavilion seating, BBQ furniture, and garden benches — excellent outdoor durability at a price point that makes budget-conscious RA and JMB procurement feasible for larger furniture orders. Nyatoh is used for multipurpose hall chairs and tables where interior-grade finish quality is appropriate and weather resistance is not the primary criterion. For children’s area furniture, we use Merbau with a non-toxic water-based finish — avoiding any solvent-based or high-VOC coating on surfaces that children will regularly touch.
Our Supply Process for Residential & Recreation Clubs
- Facility Assessment: We visit the recreational facility to assess all furniture requirements, measure key areas (pool deck, pavilion, multipurpose hall), and discuss the RA committee’s or JMB’s budget and priority list.
- Phased Proposal: We prepare a phased furniture supply proposal — prioritising the highest-impact items (typically poolside furniture and pavilion seating) within the available budget, with later phases for secondary areas.
- Tender Support: For RA and JMB procurement that follows a formal tender or quotation process, we provide formal quotations on company letterhead in the required format. We are registered with SSM and can provide all required company documents for institutional procurement.
- Delivery & Installation: Delivery and installation with anchoring of all pool-area furniture. Maintenance documentation provided on handover.
Care & Maintenance
Pool area furniture should be cleaned monthly with mild detergent and soft brush, rinsed well. Apply teak oil to pool furniture every 6 months. Inspect all post base connections and stainless hardware quarterly. For multipurpose hall furniture, clean after each event use with a damp cloth and mild cleaner. Apply a maintenance coat of hardwax oil to indoor furniture every 2–3 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Oriental Allure Design offer special pricing for RA and JMB procurement?
Yes — we understand that residents’ associations and JMB management bodies operate under tight community budgets and have specific procurement process requirements. We offer community pricing for RA and JMB orders (typically 10–15% below our standard commercial pricing for equivalent specification), phased payment options to align with RA annual budget cycles, and formal quotation documentation in the format required for AGM approval processes. Contact us at +60 16-717 9573 to discuss your association’s requirements.
How do we manage the furniture procurement process for our RA?
The typical process for RA furniture procurement involves: (1) RA committee identifies the requirement and budget; (2) at least 3 quotations are obtained from furniture suppliers for AGM or committee approval; (3) the approved quotation is used as the basis for a purchase order or letter of award; (4) furniture is delivered and the RA representative signs a delivery acknowledgement. We support this process at every step — providing the formal quotation documentation, participating in committee meetings if required, and providing delivery and handover documentation for RA records.
Can poolside furniture be installed directly on pool tiles?
Yes — we use adjustable stainless steel feet on all poolside furniture to accommodate any slight unevenness in the pool deck tiles. The adjustable feet also keep the timber slightly above the tile surface, preventing water pooling under the timber base (which would accelerate decay even in Chengal). For anchored furniture, we use stainless base plate anchors with stainless expansion bolts into the pool deck slab. All anchor work requires care to avoid cutting through any waterproof membrane — we check with the pool contractor on membrane depth before drilling any anchor points.
What does a community poolside furniture set cost?
A set of 6 Chengal poolside benches (1,800 mm, grooved seat, stainless hardware, teak oil finish, stainless base plate anchors) for a standard JB residential community pool typically costs RM 7,200–RM 12,000 for the complete set supplied and installed. A covered pavilion with integrated bench seating (4×4 m structure, 3 bench runs, Merbau) runs RM 18,000–RM 30,000 including the structure. WhatsApp +60 16-717 9573 for a community-priced quotation.
