Overview: Why Hardwood Decking Defines Outdoor Living in Johor Bahru
Outdoor timber decking is one of the most transformative home improvement projects available to landed homeowners in Johor Bahru. A well-designed hardwood deck extends the living area of your home into the garden, creates a dedicated outdoor dining and lounge space, frames a swimming pool with warmth and elegance, and dramatically increases the perceived value of your property. Unlike concrete paving or ceramic tiles, hardwood decking is comfortable underfoot, stays cooler in direct sun than hard masonry, and creates a sensory connection with nature that synthetic composite or plastic decking materials cannot replicate.
Malaysia’s tropical forest heritage gives us access to the world’s finest natural hardwood decking species. Chengal, Balau, Merbau, and Belian have been used for outdoor decking in Malaysia for generations — in heritage shophouses, colonial rest houses, coastal chalets, and private bungalows. These species have proven their durability in Malaysia’s climate through decades of actual use, not just laboratory testing. At Oriental Allure Design, we source, fabricate, and install custom hardwood decking for pool surrounds, garden terraces, rooftop platforms, restaurant outdoor areas, and resort properties across Johor Bahru.

Timber Decking Applications
- Pool Deck: The most popular decking application in JB’s bungalow and semi-D market. Hardwood pool decking surrounding a private swimming pool creates the resort experience at home. Key requirements: grooved board profile for anti-slip when wet, board orientation perpendicular to pool edge for drainage, and a species with high natural durability (Chengal or Balau recommended) given constant water splash and chemical exposure from pool treatment.
- Garden Terrace / Patio Deck: A raised or ground-level hardwood platform in the garden for outdoor dining, BBQ, or relaxation. Can be designed at multiple levels, integrated with landscape features, or connected directly to the house through sliding doors. The most flexible decking application in terms of design — any shape, any size, any level.
- Rooftop Deck: A hardwood deck installed on a concrete flat roof using adjustable stainless steel pedestals that allow drainage across the roof membrane while providing a level deck surface above. The pedestal system prevents any fixings penetrating the waterproof membrane. Popular for condominium penthouse units and commercial rooftop F&B areas in JB.
- Jetty & Pontoon Deck: For waterfront properties along the Johor Strait, Sungai Skudai, or coastal resort properties — hardwood decking for private jetties and fishing pontoons. Species selection for tidal exposure requires Class 1 durability (Chengal or Belian) and stainless fasteners throughout.
- Restaurant & Cafe Outdoor Floor: F&B operators in JB increasingly specify hardwood decking for alfresco dining areas — it creates an immediate premium visual identity, is comfortable for diners in open footwear, and conveys an artisan quality that ceramic tiles cannot. We have supplied decking for multiple JB restaurants and cafes in Taman Molek, Bukit Indah, and Permas Jaya.
Best Hardwood Species for Outdoor Decking in Malaysia
Chengal is the gold standard for Malaysian outdoor decking — Class 1 natural durability, silica content that resists fungal attack, and a density of 830–880 kg/m³ that provides excellent tread resistance. A Chengal deck will last 30–50 years with annual oiling and is the preferred species for any high-value or resort application. Balau (Shorea spp.) is extremely dense (880–1,040 kg/m³), resists cupping and checking well when properly installed with adequate gap, and is the most cost-competitive premium decking species. Merbau is the most widely installed Malaysian decking species — excellent durability (Class 2, often borderline Class 1), warm reddish-brown colour, and a price premium over Balau that most homeowners find justified for the better colour. Belian (Eusideroxylon zwageri) from East Malaysia is the heaviest and hardest commercial hardwood available in Malaysia (density over 1,100 kg/m³) — essentially impervious to decay and insects. Its extreme hardness makes it more difficult to work but produces a virtually indestructible deck. Specified for heavy commercial applications, jetties, and any location where maximum durability is the primary criterion.
Board Profiles & Sizes
Decking boards are available in several profiles. The most common in Malaysia is smooth face with eased (chamfered) edges — a clean, contemporary look suitable for garden terraces and feature areas. For pool decking and any wet area, we specify a grooved face profile — parallel grooves at 4 mm pitch across the board face that provide drainage channels and anti-slip texture when wet. For a more rustic or heritage aesthetic, a rough-sawn or skip-planed face provides more texture and character. Board width is typically 90, 120, or 140 mm — wider boards create a more luxurious, contemporary appearance while narrower boards are more stable dimensionally. We always install boards with a 5–6 mm gap between adjacent boards for drainage and expansion.
Sub-Frame Structure: The Foundation of a Long-Lasting Deck
The deck surface is only as durable as the sub-frame beneath it. All sub-frame timbers (joists, bearers, posts) must be of equal or greater durability than the deck boards — we specify Class 1 or Class 2 hardwood throughout. Joists are set at 400–600 mm centres depending on board thickness. All sub-frame timber is installed at least 150 mm above soil level to prevent ground contact and termite attack. At ground contact points (post bases), we use stainless steel post base brackets set into concrete rather than timber directly in concrete — a concrete pocket holding a timber post is the single most common source of premature deck failure in Malaysia. For rooftop decks, we use adjustable stainless pedestals at 400×400 mm grid spacing, allowing full drainage across the roof membrane.
Our Timber Decking Installation Process
- Site Survey: We assess the deck area, existing ground conditions or roof structure, level differences, drainage requirements, and any adjacent structures or planting that affect design.
- Design & Quote: We prepare a deck plan showing board orientation, sub-frame layout, steps, and any integrated features (seating, planters, lighting channels). Quotation is itemised by material and labour.
- Fabrication: Sub-frame members are cut to length and pre-drilled in our workshop. Deck boards are machined to profile, end-grain sealed, and bundled for delivery.
- Installation: Sub-frame is installed first, checked for level, and all bearer/post connections completed. Deck boards are then laid with consistent spacing, fixed with hidden clips or stainless screws, and trimmed to final line.
- Finishing: All deck surfaces receive 2 coats of exterior deck oil applied on-site after installation, with particular attention to cut ends and any board edges exposed to standing water.
Care & Maintenance for Outdoor Timber Decking
New hardwood decking in Malaysia will naturally silver-grey within 3–6 months if left uncoated — this is UV-caused surface oxidation and does not affect structural integrity. To maintain the warm timber colour, apply a UV-resistant deck oil every 6–12 months. Clean the deck with a mild soap solution and stiff-bristle brush before each oil application to remove mould, algae, and accumulated grime. Keep all drainage gaps between boards clear — a pressure washer at low pressure directed along the gaps is very effective. Inspect all board fastenings annually and tighten any loose screws. In pool applications, rinse the deck with fresh water weekly to remove chlorine residue which can cause premature finish breakdown.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does hardwood decking compare to composite decking in Malaysia?
Composite decking (wood-plastic composite, WPC) is maintenance-free but has significant limitations in Malaysia’s climate. In full tropical sun, dark composite boards can reach surface temperatures of 65–75°C — uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. Real hardwood stays significantly cooler. Composite boards also have a characteristic synthetic appearance that no amount of embossing fully eliminates. Premium hardwood decking from durable Malaysian species like Chengal or Balau will outlast most composite products with appropriate maintenance — and it is a natural material, not a plastic. For discerning homeowners and commercial applications, hardwood remains the superior choice.
Do I need a permit for a garden deck in JB?
Ground-level or near-ground-level decks (under 600 mm above natural ground level) within the rear or side garden of your property generally do not require planning permission from MBJB or MPJBT under standard residential land use conditions. Raised decks above 600 mm, or any deck that encroaches on the building setback line, may require a minor works permit. We advise checking with your local authority based on your specific plot. For strata and condominium properties, JMB approval is typically required before any external works.
How long will a hardwood deck last in Malaysia’s climate?
A properly designed and installed Chengal or Balau deck with annual oiling will last 25–40 years. Merbau decks typically last 15–25 years. The most critical factors for deck longevity in Malaysia are: sub-frame timber quality (must be Class 1 or 2, not softwood), adequate drainage gap between boards, post-to-concrete connections above ground (not in ground), and annual oiling. Decks that fail prematurely — within 5–10 years — almost always have one of these issues: softwood sub-frame, blocked drainage, or posts in direct ground contact without stainless base plates.
What is the price of hardwood decking per square metre in JB?
Indicative pricing for supply and installation: Merbau decking RM 150–220/m², Balau RM 180–260/m², Chengal RM 250–350/m². Pricing varies with board size, sub-frame complexity, and site access. A typical 20 m² garden deck in Merbau including sub-frame, decking boards, and 2 coats of deck oil costs approximately RM 3,500–RM 5,500 fully installed.
