Hardwood Staircase & Handrail Johor Bahru: Custom Solid Timber Stairs That Last a Lifetime

Table of Contents

Overview: The Focal Point of Every Two-Storey Home

In a two-storey or three-storey landed home, the internal staircase is the single most prominent piece of joinery in the house. Positioned at the entrance hall or living room, it is the first thing visitors see and a daily experience for every resident. A solid hardwood staircase — properly designed, fabricated from premium timber, and finished to a high standard — transforms this purely functional element into a piece of architectural sculpture that anchors the entire interior design of the home.

In Johor Bahru’s landed residential market — from established neighbourhoods like Taman Molek and Taman Austin to new developments in Iskandar Puteri and Horizon Hills — the upgrade from marble tile stairs with steel handrails to a custom hardwood staircase is one of the highest-value single renovation investments a homeowner can make. The visual impact is immediate and the material value — real solid timber that improves with age — is enduring.

At Oriental Allure Design, we design, fabricate, and install complete custom hardwood staircases: treads, risers, stringers, newel posts, handrails, and balustrades. We work from your architect’s or interior designer’s drawings or develop our own design from scratch. Every staircase is fabricated in our Masai workshop from kiln-dried Malaysian hardwood and installed by our experienced team.

Location & Service Area

Our workshop is at 1, Jalan Penaga 1, Kawasan Perindustrian Kota Putri, 81750 Masai, Johor. We install staircases throughout Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri, Skudai, Kulai, Kluang, Batu Pahat, and Muar.

Staircase Types We Fabricate

  • Straight Flight: The most common staircase in Malaysian landed homes — a single run of steps from ground to upper floor with no change in direction. Simple to fabricate and install, maximum structural efficiency. Can be made dramatically beautiful with the right tread profile, open risers, and a sculptural newel post and handrail.
  • L-Shaped (Quarter Turn): A staircase that turns 90° at a landing. Requires more floor area than a straight flight but fits better in most JB house plans where the staircase sits against a side wall. The landing can be designed as a feature — cantilevered, lit from below, or finished in contrasting timber to the treads.
  • U-Shaped (Half Turn / Return Stair): A staircase that reverses direction at a landing — requires the greatest floor footprint but creates the most impressive visual impact. The “grand staircase” of hotel lobbies and large bungalows. Both flights and the landing are visible simultaneously, creating a sense of architectural occasion.
  • Floating Tread Staircase: Individual hardwood treads cantilevered from a central spine or concealed steel support — no visible stringers, no risers. The most contemporary staircase form — visually light, open, and dramatic. Requires engineering of the support structure but the result is a staircase that appears to float in mid-air.
  • Spiral Staircase: A helical staircase around a central column — the most space-efficient staircase form for tight floor plan situations. We fabricate timber treads on a central steel column, with a continuous curved handrail in solid timber. Minimum diameter is typically 1,600 mm for comfortable adult use.

Handrails & Balustrades: Safety and Sculpture in One

The handrail and balustrade system defines the staircase’s visual character more than any other element. We offer three main balustrade systems that can be combined with any staircase type:

  • Full Timber Balustrade: Turned or square-section timber balusters (typically 50×50 mm) at maximum 100 mm clear spacing (MS 1183 requirement), with solid timber newel posts and a profiled continuous handrail. The most traditional approach — warm, complete, and fully in keeping with a solid timber staircase. Popular for homes with a classic or resort aesthetic.
  • Timber Frame with Glass Infill: A timber top rail, bottom rail, and newel posts with 10–12 mm tempered or laminated glass panels filling the balustrade space. Creates a light, contemporary appearance while maintaining the warmth of a timber handrail and posts. Allows full visibility through the staircase — popular in open-plan living spaces where sightlines are important.
  • Timber Rail with Metal Rod Infill: A timber handrail and newel posts with stainless steel round rods (16 mm diameter at 100 mm centres) filling the balustrade. The most maintenance-free infill option — the steel rods require no painting or staining and the contrast between warm timber and cool steel creates a sophisticated industrial-modern aesthetic popular in contemporary bungalows.

Best Wood Species for Staircases

Stair treads in a Malaysian home are walked on multiple times daily by residents in bare feet, shoes, and sandals — they must be hard, durable, and comfortable underfoot. Our standard staircase species are: Merbau (Janka 1,925 lbf — excellent tread resistance, warm colour, good with oil or varnish), Balau (very high hardness, density 880–1,040 kg/m³, exceptional tread durability, deep brown colour), Chengal (premium choice, Janka hardness exceeds 2,000 lbf, maximum durability and the most prized natural appearance), and American White Oak (an imported species popular for contemporary interiors — consistent grain, accepts dark stain beautifully, a standard in international interior design but requires preservative treatment for any humid locations).

Safety Standards for Timber Staircases in Malaysia

Malaysian staircases must comply with the Uniform Building By-Laws (UBBL 1984) and MS 1183 for balustrade loading. Key requirements: minimum 838 mm clear handrail height from tread nosing for residential use (1,000 mm for commercial/public buildings); balustrade infill openings maximum 100 mm clear (to prevent child entrapment); handrail loading minimum 0.74 kN/m horizontal (residential) or 1.5 kN/m (public); tread going (depth) minimum 250 mm; riser height maximum 220 mm. Our designs comply with all UBBL requirements as standard, and we can provide structural calculations for submission to JKRT or JMB if required.

Our Staircase Fabrication Process

We begin with a detailed site survey: measuring the floor-to-floor height, available plan footprint, ceiling clearance, and existing structural slab opening dimensions. We then prepare a full SketchUp or AutoCAD design with tread-by-tread layout, handrail profile, and balustrade detail for client approval. Once approved, timber is selected, cut to section, and fabricated in our Masai workshop over 3–4 weeks. Treads are machined to a nosing profile, stringers are routed for tread and riser housing, newel posts are machined and mortised, and handrails are shaped to profile. The completed assembly is sanded and pre-finished before delivery. On-site installation typically takes 2–3 days for a complete straight or L-shaped staircase.

Care & Maintenance

Stair treads receive the highest wear of any timber surface in the home. For oiled treads, apply a maintenance coat of hard wax oil annually — this is especially important at the nosing (the leading edge of each tread), which receives the most footfall abrasion. For varnished treads, inspect the nosing finish every 6 months and touch-up any bare areas before they expand. Wipe spills immediately. Avoid rubber-backed mats on hardwood treads — they trap moisture and cause localised finish breakdown. After 10–15 years, hardwood treads can be lightly sanded and completely refinished in a day, restoring them to new appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you overlay hardwood treads on an existing concrete staircase?

Yes — this is one of the most popular renovation upgrades we do for JB homes. The existing concrete stair structure remains, and we fabricate and install hardwood tread overlays (typically 30–40 mm thick) bonded and mechanically fixed to the concrete. Matching hardwood nosings, risers, and a complete new handrail and balustrade system can transform a plain concrete staircase into a premium hardwood feature without demolition. Lead time for a tread overlay project is typically 2–3 weeks.

How do I prevent squeaking in timber staircase treads?

Stair squeak is caused by movement between tread and riser or tread and stringer — typically because timber has dried below its installation moisture content and created gaps at joints. Prevention: install at 12–14% MC and allow the staircase to acclimatise for 2 weeks in the conditioned space before finishing. Fix: inject PVA woodworking adhesive into the squeaking joint via a fine-nozzle glue bottle and clamp temporarily with a folded cloth. For persistent squeak in an installed staircase, drive a 50 mm countersunk screw through the tread into the riser from above, fill the hole with a timber plug, and sand flush.

What does a custom hardwood staircase cost in JB?

A complete replacement staircase (12–14 treads, Merbau treads and risers, full timber balustrade, oil finish) for a standard 2-storey JB home typically costs RM 18,000–RM 30,000 for a straight flight, or RM 28,000–RM 45,000 for an L-shaped staircase with landing, depending on species, balustrade type, and design complexity. Tread overlay projects (over existing concrete) are typically RM 8,000–RM 15,000. WhatsApp +60 16-717 9573 for a site survey and detailed quotation.

Do you supply and install the glass panels for glass-infill balustrades?

Yes — we supply and install tempered or laminated safety glass panels as part of our complete balustrade system. All glass is minimum 10 mm tempered or 8.76 mm (6+0.76+6) laminated, compliant with MS ISO 12543. Glass edges are polished and panels are bedded in EPDM setting blocks within the timber channel. We do not use bare glass edges resting on timber without a proper setting — this is a common failure point in cheaper installations.
