Overview: The Yacht Club Environment
Johor Bahru’s strategic position at the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia — with direct water access to the Singapore Strait, the Johor Strait, and the South China Sea — makes it a natural base for the regional sailing and boating community. The Royal Johor Sailing Club, Puteri Harbour Marina, and the growing marina facilities at Desaru Coast serve a membership and visiting-vessel clientele that includes Singapore-based sailors, regional racing teams, and international yachts on passage through the straits. The furniture at these facilities — on the club terrace, at the bar, along the pontoon walkway — must match the expectations of a discerning international sailing community that has experienced the best waterfront clubs in Singapore, Thailand, and Australia.
Hardwood furniture is the natural material choice for yacht clubs and marinas. Teak (or its local equivalent, Chengal) is the traditional material of quality yacht deck furniture worldwide — its appearance in the clubhouse and on the marina pontoon connects the facility visually with the sailing tradition. At Oriental Allure Design, we supply custom hardwood furniture for yacht clubs, marina clubhouses, and waterfront sailing facilities in Johor Bahru. Our marine-grade furniture construction uses the same species, hardware, and finish standards as our jetty and decking work — built for the demanding salt-air, high-UV environment of the waterfront club.

Products for Yacht Clubs & Marina Facilities
- Club Terrace Dining Set: The waterfront terrace dining arrangement where members relax, debrief after races, and entertain guests. Solid Chengal dining chairs (with comfortable angled back for extended sitting), matching dining tables with umbrella hole, and side tables for drink service. The full salt-air specification: all hardware 316 stainless, 5-coat UV oil, grooved seat surface for drainage after sea-spray.
- Marina Pontoon Walkway Bench: Long benches positioned along the pontoon finger piers or main dock walkway — where crew members wait, work on sails, and socialise. Solid Chengal, anchored to the pontoon structure with stainless through-bolts, designed for the movement of floating pontoon structures. Backless design for 360° access in the working marina environment.
- Club Bar Counter & Stools: The yacht club bar is the social heart of the facility — where race results are debated and sailing stories are told. A solid hardwood bar top (Chengal or Merbau, 60–80 mm thick, bull-nose edge) with integrated stainless drip rail, matching bar stools at 650 mm seat height, and a service back bar in matching timber. The full complement of a traditional yacht club bar in quality Malaysian hardwood.
- Committee Room Table: A long boardroom-style table for the club’s race committee and general committee meetings — solid hardwood, typically 3,000–4,000 mm long, with matching chairs. The committee room is where the club’s culture and governance are expressed — a quality hardwood table is the appropriate material statement for this purpose.
- Trophy Cabinet: A custom hardwood trophy display cabinet — floor-standing or wall-mounted, with glazed doors and internal LED lighting — for displaying the club’s race trophies, shields, and honour boards. A signature piece of clubhouse joinery that expresses the club’s competitive heritage.
Marine-Grade Construction for Salt-Air Environments
Furniture within 500 m of open sea or tidal waters in Johor — particularly on the Johor Strait facing south towards Singapore — is subject to salt aerosol deposition that dramatically accelerates corrosion of any non-stainless hardware and degrades less durable timber finishes faster than inland outdoor furniture. Our yacht club and marina furniture specification addresses this through: Species — Chengal exclusively for all outdoor and semi-outdoor furniture (Class 1 durability, high silica content that resists salt aerosol attack); Hardware — all hardware 316-grade stainless steel (not 304, which corrodes in salt air); all bolts stainless rather than screws; no zinc-plated or aluminium fittings anywhere; Finish — 5-coat UV-resistant penetrating oil system, applied in the workshop (3 coats) and on-site (2 site coats) for maximum total dry film thickness; End grain — all end grain sealed with penetrating epoxy end-grain sealer before final finish application — this is the most critical step for longevity in salt-air environments.
Wood Species for Yacht Club Furniture
Chengal is our specification for all outdoor and open terrace furniture at yacht clubs and marinas — its Class 1 natural durability and natural moisture resistance make it the closest local equivalent to teak in performance and appearance. Its warm golden colour (freshly oiled) and the silver-grey patina it develops if left uncoated are both aesthetically appropriate for a waterfront sailing club. Merbau is used for covered terrace and partially-protected furniture positions where the Chengal premium is not warranted. Nyatoh is our specification for interior committee room, lounge, and bar areas where interior finish quality is the primary criterion and weather resistance is not required.
Our Process
- Facility Survey: Visit the club or marina to assess all furniture locations, measure the terrace and bar areas, understand the club’s aesthetic and functional brief.
- Design Proposal: Design options presented for club committee approval. Physical sample in the proposed species and finish provided for sign-off.
- Production: Full marine-grade production run in our Masai workshop. All pieces finished to 5-coat specification before delivery.
- Delivery & Installation: Delivered and installed, with pontoon walkway benches anchored per our marine structural specification.
Care & Maintenance
Salt-air environment furniture requires more frequent maintenance than inland outdoor furniture. Wipe all outdoor surfaces with fresh water weekly to remove salt deposition. Apply teak oil every 4–6 months (more frequent than the standard 12-month cycle). Inspect all hardware bi-annually. The marina environment is unforgiving of neglected maintenance — a regular light care programme prevents the need for costly full restoration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chengal a suitable substitute for teak in a yacht club environment?
Yes — Chengal is Malaysia’s closest indigenous equivalent to teak (Tectona grandis) in terms of natural durability, natural oil content, and resistance to moisture and UV. Both are Class 1 hardwoods with similar density (Chengal: 830–880 kg/m³, teak: 600–750 kg/m³ — Chengal is actually denser and harder). Chengal’s warm golden-brown colour when fresh and silver-grey patina when weathered are very similar to teak. For Malaysian yacht clubs that want the teak aesthetic without the import cost of plantation teak, Chengal is the definitive local alternative.
What is the price of a full yacht club terrace furniture set?
A complete outdoor terrace furniture set for a 60-seat yacht club terrace (15 dining tables + 60 chairs, Chengal, 5-coat UV oil finish, full salt-air specification, delivered and installed) typically costs RM 55,000–RM 95,000 depending on chair and table design complexity. A matching bar counter and 10 bar stools adds approximately RM 18,000–RM 35,000. WhatsApp +60 16-717 9573 for a site-specific proposal for your club.
Do you supply furniture for Singapore-registered yacht clubs with JB facilities?
Yes — several Singapore-based sailing organisations and yacht clubs have facilities or reciprocal arrangements in Johor Bahru’s marina precinct. We supply and install furniture at these facilities and can coordinate delivery with Singapore-based procurement teams if required. All furniture supplied to Singapore-registered organisations complies with Singapore customs requirements for Malaysian-origin goods under the CSFTA/AFTA preferential tariff framework.
