Overview: Timber as Interior and Exterior Cladding
Timber wall cladding — applying solid hardwood boards, panels, or battens to a wall surface — is one of the most versatile and impactful design moves in both residential and commercial interiors and exteriors. Inside a home, a hardwood feature wall behind the living room sofa, bedhead, or TV console creates a focal point of warmth and texture that paint or wallpaper cannot replicate. The play of natural light across real wood grain changes through the day, creating a living surface that synthetic alternatives mimic but never match. In commercial settings — hotel lobbies, restaurant feature walls, retail brand environments — timber cladding signals quality, authenticity, and craft that immediately elevates the perceived value of the space.
On exteriors, hardwood cladding defines the architectural character of a building’s facade. Whether used as a full facade material in the tropical modern tradition — entire walls clad in vertical Merbau boards — or as an accent element framing windows or highlighting entry zones, exterior timber cladding creates a connection between the built form and the natural landscape that no masonry or metal cladding achieves. Oriental Allure Design fabricates and installs custom hardwood wall cladding and timber panel systems for both interior and exterior applications across Johor Bahru.

Types of Timber Wall Cladding
- Horizontal Shiplap / Lap Cladding: Boards installed horizontally with a rebated or bevelled overlap joint — the classic weatherboard/lap-siding appearance. Each board overlaps the one below, shedding rain efficiently on exterior applications. Creates a strong horizontal rhythm on both exterior facades and interior feature walls. Popular for tropical modern bungalows in Iskandar Puteri and resort chalets.
- Vertical Board Cladding: Boards installed vertically — creates a contemporary, linear aesthetic that emphasises ceiling height. Vertical cladding allows any board-to-board joint to drain rain freely on exterior applications without the overlapping detail required for horizontal boards. Popular for contemporary interior feature walls and hotel room bedhead walls.
- Batten Screen: Equally-spaced narrow battens (typically 50×25 mm at 100 mm centres) fixed to a backing frame — creating a semi-transparent screen that filters light and provides partial privacy. Used as interior room dividers, staircase wall treatments, exterior sun screens, and decorative facade elements. The play of light through the gaps creates dramatic shadow patterns throughout the day.
- Solid Panel Cladding: Full-thickness solid hardwood panels (typically 18–22 mm) in a grid pattern — wainscoting panels on lower walls, full-height feature panels behind a TV or bedhead. Panels can be flat, raised, or recessed within a frame to create traditional or classical effects. Popular for heritage restoration and for premium hotel and restaurant fit-outs.
- 3D Relief Cladding: CNC-machined timber panels with geometric relief patterns — hexagonal, chevron, wave, or custom motifs cut into the panel surface to create a three-dimensional textured wall. An emerging design trend in high-end residential and F&B interiors in JB. Each panel is unique to the client’s brief and can incorporate corporate logos or cultural motifs.
Key Applications
Interior Feature Walls: The most common application — a single wall in the living room, bedroom, or dining area clad in hardwood boards or panels to create a focal point. The timber wall anchors furniture arrangement, provides acoustic dampening in open-plan spaces, and creates the warm, natural ambiance that defines premium tropical interiors. TV Console Feature Wall: A full-height hardwood cladding panel behind the TV unit — often incorporating concealed cable channels and mounting provision for the TV. This treatment resolves the aesthetic challenge of the TV dominating a wall by framing it within a rich timber surface. Exterior Facade Cladding: Partial or full exterior facade treatment in hardwood — a design signature of tropical modern architecture in Malaysia. Requires Class 1 or 2 durability species, proper ventilated cavity behind boards, and stainless fasteners throughout. Restaurant & Hospitality Interiors: Timber feature walls for F&B and hotel fit-outs — creating brand identity and atmosphere through the warmth and authenticity of real wood. We have completed feature wall installations for JB restaurants, cafe chains, and boutique hotel properties.
Wood Species for Wall Cladding
Interior cladding species do not need high natural durability (no weather exposure) but must have excellent machining quality for consistent board profiles, good colour and grain character, and take finishes well. We recommend Nyatoh for interior painted or lightly stained cladding (uniform grain, excellent machining, cost-effective), Merbau for interior oiled or varnished natural-colour applications (rich warm tone, distinctive grain, highly characterful), and American White Oak for contemporary interiors where a light, even grain with a white or grey wash is desired. For exterior cladding, Chengal or Merbau are the appropriate choices given their Class 1–2 natural durability ratings.
Installation Methods
All timber wall cladding must be installed over a properly prepared substrate. Interior cladding boards are typically fixed to a timber or aluminium batten framework (25 mm minimum air gap behind cladding for moisture drainage and air movement) using concealed clip systems or face-fixed stainless pins. Exterior cladding requires a ventilated cavity of minimum 25 mm behind the boards, a water-resistant breather membrane behind the battens, and 316-grade stainless fasteners throughout. End grain must be sealed with a penetrating end-grain sealer before installation — unsealed end grain absorbs moisture at 10–20x the rate of face grain and is the primary entry point for decay in cladding boards. All boards are pre-finished in the workshop before installation — this ensures all surfaces, including back faces and edges, are sealed.
Care & Maintenance
Interior timber cladding requires minimal maintenance — dust periodically and wipe with a lightly dampened cloth. For oiled surfaces, apply a maintenance coat of hardwax oil once every 2–3 years or when the surface appears dry or flat. Avoid direct water contact on interior cladding (especially in bathrooms where wet-area-appropriate finishes must be specified). Exterior cladding requires annual inspection and maintenance oiling — the same schedule as outdoor decking. Check all board-end conditions at eaves, sills, and base annually for any signs of finish breakdown or water ingress.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is hardwood wall cladding suitable for bathrooms in Malaysia?
Yes, with appropriate species and finish selection. For wet-area timber cladding (shower walls, bathroom feature walls), we specify naturally water-resistant species (Chengal, Merbau) with a high-build two-component waterproof varnish or marine-grade epoxy finish. The critical detail is grout-free joints — water pooling in any joint will eventually lead to finish breakdown. We design wet-area timber walls with V-groove or open-joint profiles that allow any water to drain freely rather than pool. Properly executed hardwood bathroom feature walls are spectacular and fully functional.
How much timber is needed for a feature wall installation?
For a 4 m wide × 3 m high feature wall (12 m²) using 120×15 mm boards at 5 mm gap, you need approximately 14.5 linear metres per square metre of wall = approximately 175 linear metres of board, plus a 15% waste allowance = 200 linear metres. We provide a material schedule with every quotation so you know exactly what is being supplied. Feature wall materials are typically quoted per square metre of completed wall including substrate frame, boards, clips, and finish.
Can timber cladding be used on condominium interior walls?
Yes — timber cladding is very popular for condominium interior renovations in JB’s premium residential market. Key considerations: the cladding system must not penetrate the concrete structural wall (no through-bolts for water pipes or electrical conduit to be avoided), the total weight of the cladding system must be within the floor slab loading allowance, and all fire safety requirements of the UBBL must be met — we use fire-retardant treated timber for any internal cladding in high-rise residential or commercial applications where required by the local building department.
What is the price of timber feature wall installation in JB?
Interior hardwood feature wall cladding (Nyatoh or Merbau, vertical boards, natural oil finish) typically costs RM 120–RM 180 per square metre supplied and installed. Premium species (American White Oak) or complex profiles (3D relief panels) run RM 200–RM 350/m². Exterior facade cladding in Merbau or Chengal is typically RM 180–RM 280/m² installed due to the more demanding preparation and installation requirements.
