Overview: Why a Hardwood Fence Makes a Statement
The boundary fence of a landed property is one of its most visible features from the street. Most JB landed homes use brick walls or metal grille panels as boundary fencing — functional but neither creates the warm, natural boundary statement that a well-designed hardwood timber fence provides. A Merbau or Chengal timber fence — whether a privacy fence with close-boarded panels, a decorative batten screen, or a garden fence that integrates with a landscape design — gives a property a distinctive natural identity that is rare in suburban JB and immediately noticed.
Beyond aesthetics, timber fencing is lighter than masonry (less structural foundation required), faster to install than brickwork, and can be designed to allow varying degrees of visibility — from fully solid panels for maximum privacy to open-batten designs that maintain a sense of spaciousness. At Oriental Allure Design, we design and fabricate custom hardwood fencing and garden pagar for residential, resort, and commercial landscape applications across Johor Bahru.

Types of Hardwood Fencing We Fabricate
- Close-Boarded Privacy Fence: Vertical boards fitted tightly side-by-side between posts — maximum privacy, no gaps, strong visual impact. The most popular timber fence for residential boundary applications in JB. Boards are typically 90×19 mm or 120×19 mm, with a pointed or bevelled top for a finished appearance. Posts at 1.8–2.4 m centres.
- Open Batten Screen Fence: Vertical or horizontal battens (50×25 mm) with designed gaps (typically 25–50 mm) between each batten. Provides privacy while allowing airflow — particularly important in Malaysia’s humid climate where fully enclosed garden spaces can become stagnant. The designed gap also prevents the fence acting as a wind sail — an important structural consideration in Johor’s coastal wind zones.
- Horizontal Board Fence: Wide horizontal boards (typically 140×19 mm) with 10–15 mm shadow-gap between each board — a contemporary, architectural fence style. Creates a strong horizontal rhythm. Popular for contemporary bungalows in Iskandar Puteri and Horizon Hills.
- Picket Fence: The classic small-scale garden fence — pointed pickets at 75–100 mm spacing on horizontal rails. Typically 900–1,200 mm height. Used for internal garden boundaries, planting bed edges, and front garden features. Popular for heritage-style homes and cottage-garden landscapes.
- Decorative Panel Fence: Custom-designed timber panels — geometric lattice, Malay floral motifs, or contemporary abstract patterns — CNC-routed from solid hardwood panels. Used as feature fence sections flanking entrances, garden focal points, or pool area boundaries.
Wood Species for Outdoor Fencing
Outdoor fencing timber in Malaysia must withstand full weather exposure and resist fungal decay and insect attack. Only Class 1 and Class 2 natural durability species should be used without preservative treatment. Merbau is the standard choice — Class 2 (borderline Class 1) natural durability, proven outdoor performance, warm appearance. Chengal is the premium choice — Class 1 rating, can last 30–40+ years in fully exposed outdoor conditions. Balau is specified for structural posts and rails where high compressive and bending strength is required alongside durability. Avoid Meranti, Keruing, or any Strength Group SG4–5 species for exposed outdoor fencing — these timbers lack the natural durability for sustained outdoor exposure in Malaysia’s climate.
Post Foundation & Fixing: The Critical Detail
The most common cause of premature timber fence failure in Malaysia is post base decay — the post is set in a concrete footing with a gap that traps water at the timber-concrete interface. We use three post installation methods: Stainless Post Base Plate (post sits on a stainless steel anchor bolted to a concrete pad above grade — our preferred method), Hardwood Post in Concrete with Clearance (50 mm clearance between post end and concrete fill, sealed with flexible PU), and Steel Post Sleeve (galvanised steel tube set in concrete, hardwood sleeved over the steel starting 50 mm above ground). All three methods keep the hardwood clear of sustained ground contact to maximise service life.
Our Timber Fencing Process
- Site Survey: Measure the fence run, identify post positions, assess ground conditions, confirm the fence line.
- Design & Quote: Fence elevation drawing showing post positions, panel layout, heights, and all details. Itemised quotation.
- Fabrication: All fence panels pre-fabricated in our Masai workshop. Posts machined, capped, and pre-finished.
- Foundation: Post bases installed first and allowed to cure before fence panels are fitted.
- Installation: Panels fitted between posts, checked for level and vertical, all fixings made. Final finish coat applied to all cut ends on-site.
Care & Maintenance
Apply a maintenance coat of teak oil or UV-resistant deck oil annually to all fence surfaces. Inspect all post bases every 6 months for any signs of water pooling or finish breakdown at the critical ground-level zone. Clear any leaf litter or soil accumulation against fence boards. Trim any climbing plants or shrubs that press against the fence — trapped moisture is the enemy of outdoor timber.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a hardwood fence last in Malaysia?
A properly installed Merbau fence with annual oiling will last 15–20 years. Chengal will last 25–35 years. The critical factor is post base treatment — keeping the timber clear of sustained ground contact is the single most important factor in fence longevity.
Can I build a fence on the boundary line with my neighbour in JB?
Party boundary fencing requires agreement from both property owners. Where only one owner is building the fence, set it inside your own boundary line (typically 75–150 mm) to avoid legal disputes. MBJB/MPJBT do not typically require planning permission for garden fences up to 1.8 m height within your own property boundary.
What is the price of a hardwood fence per linear metre in JB?
A close-boarded Merbau privacy fence (1.8 m height, 90×19 mm boards, 100×100 mm posts at 1.8 m centres, stainless post base plates, teak oil finish) typically costs RM 350–RM 500 per linear metre supplied and installed. Chengal equivalent runs RM 450–RM 650/lm. WhatsApp +60 16-717 9573 with your fence run length and height for an accurate quote.
Do you fabricate pool fencing to safety standards?
Yes. Pool barrier fencing should comply with DOSH guidelines and any strata/JMB-specific requirements: minimum 1.2 m height, no climbable horizontal elements below 900 mm, gaps maximum 100 mm, and a self-closing self-latching gate. We design and fabricate pool-compliant hardwood fencing systems with self-closing gate mechanisms on request.
