Overview: Why Timber Window Frames Outperform Aluminium in Tropical Homes

Aluminium windows dominate the Malaysian residential market because they are cheap to produce and require no maintenance. But aluminium is a thermal bridge — it conducts heat at 200 W/m·K, meaning aluminium window frames in a west-facing JB home transfer significant radiant heat into the room and contribute to air conditioning loads. Solid hardwood window frames, by contrast, have a thermal conductivity of just 0.13–0.17 W/m·K — roughly 1,200 times less conductive than aluminium. In practical terms, a hardwood window frame stays cooler, reduces HVAC load, and contributes to a more comfortable interior climate.

Beyond thermal performance, hardwood window frames offer dimensional stability in humid conditions, acoustic dampening from their mass, and an aesthetic authenticity that has been valued in Malaysian architecture for centuries. The traditional Malay house was designed around timber ventilation systems — wide eaves, elevated floors, and cross-ventilation through timber louvres and casements. Modern tropical architecture is rediscovering these passive cooling principles and applying them in contemporary forms, and hardwood window frames are at the centre of this revival.

At Oriental Allure Design, we fabricate custom hardwood window frames and timber louvre systems for residential renovations, new bungalow builds, resort properties, and heritage building restoration projects across Johor Bahru and wider Johor state.

Workshop at 1, Jalan Penaga 1, Kawasan Perindustrian Kota Putri, 81750 Masai, Johor. We supply and install timber windows throughout Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri, Skudai, Kulai, Kluang, Batu Pahat, and Muar.

Types of Timber Windows We Fabricate

  • Timber Casement Window: Side-hung sash that opens outward or inward on vertical hinges. The most common window type in Malaysian bungalows. A hardwood casement with proper weatherstripping provides excellent rain exclusion and can accept single or double glazing. We fit espagnolette lock bars for secure multi-point locking.
  • Fixed Light: A non-opening timber-framed window — purely for light and view. Used alongside openable units where ventilation is provided by other means (air conditioning or adjacent louvre panels). The simplest and most cost-effective timber window type.
  • Timber Louvre / Jalousie: A series of horizontal glass or timber slats in a timber frame that pivot simultaneously via a crank mechanism. The traditional Malaysian and tropical window — allows cross ventilation even in light rain. We fabricate both glass-louvre and solid timber louvre versions.
  • Awning Window: Top-hinged sash that opens outward at the bottom. Allows ventilation during light rain since the opened sash acts as an awning. Popular for bathrooms, utility rooms, and any window exposed to prevailing rain direction.
  • Timber Sash Window: Double-hung vertically-sliding sash — a heritage window type experiencing a revival in conservation areas and heritage shophouse restorations in JB’s Jalan Wong Ah Fook and Jalan Segget precincts. We fabricate both traditional box sash (with weights) and spring-balanced sash versions.
  • French Window: A pair of full-height casements opening floor-to-ceiling or from sill to soffit — the tropical living room’s connection to the garden or balcony. When fabricated in solid hardwood with divided lights (glazing bars), a French window becomes the architectural centrepiece of a room.

Timber Louvre Design: Malaysia’s Original Ventilation Technology

The timber louvre is arguably the most climatically intelligent window type for Malaysia. It originated in the traditional Malay house as fixed angled timber boards (papan sisip) that channelled prevailing breezes into the interior while excluding rain. Modern timber louvres mechanise this concept — a single crank operates all slats simultaneously, allowing the resident to tune ventilation from zero to full-open in seconds.

We design timber louvre panels for two primary applications. First, as operating windows in bedroom, bathroom, or living room openings — typically 600–1,200 mm wide with 75×19 mm Merbau louvre slats at 100 mm pitch. Second, as fixed architectural screen panels on the facade — a popular contemporary design element where a full-height louvre screen on a western facade provides shade and privacy while maintaining the visual lightness of an open wall. Fixed louvre screens can span floor-to-ceiling heights of 3–4 m with appropriate frame sizing and wall anchoring.

Wood Species for Window Frames

Window frames require good machining properties (to achieve tight joint tolerances), moderate to high natural durability (for any exterior exposure), and dimensional stability (to prevent sticking in humid weather). Our recommended species are Merbau for exterior casements and louvres (Class 2 durability, good stability), Nyatoh for interior windows and painted finishes (excellent machining, moderate durability), and Chengal for heritage restorations or extreme weather exposure locations. Mersawa (Anisoptera spp.) is occasionally used for large fixed lights where wide, clear boards are required — it has lower durability than Merbau but excellent dimensional stability.

Our Custom Window Fabrication Process

We measure each opening, prepare shop drawings showing section details and hardware positions, fabricate in our Masai workshop, pre-finish all components before glazing, install glazing with appropriate glazing tape and putty, and install the complete window unit on site. All exterior windows receive a full prime coat plus two finish coats before installation. All glazing is bedded on EPDM setting blocks to prevent glass contact with timber. We guarantee all windows for 12 months against defects in materials and workmanship.

Care & Maintenance

Timber windows require annual inspection and maintenance. Check all opening sashes for smooth operation — any sticking usually indicates a finish breakdown allowing moisture absorption at the frame edge. Sand lightly and recoat any bare areas immediately. Clean all drainage slots (small holes at the bottom of window frames that allow water to drain from the sill) — these can block with dust and mould, causing water pooling and premature decay. Apply teak oil or touch-up varnish to any area showing weathering annually. Every 5 years, carry out a full strip and recoat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can timber window frames be used with double glazing in Malaysia?

Yes. We fabricate timber window frames with rebates sized for double-glazed units (typically 24 mm or 28 mm overall unit thickness). Double glazing is increasingly specified in high-end JB homes and Singapore-facing projects for acoustic performance — particularly near major roads, the second link expressway, and coastal areas. The thermal benefit of double glazing is less significant in Malaysia’s uniformly warm climate than in temperate countries, but acoustic isolation can be dramatic: a 6+12+6 mm double glazed unit reduces external noise by approximately 32 dB compared to 24 dB for 6 mm single glass.

How do I stop my timber window from sticking in the monsoon season?

Timber swells in high humidity because it absorbs moisture through any unsealed surface. The solution is to ensure all six faces of every timber member — including end grain, glazing rebates, and frame-to-wall joints — are fully sealed before installation. A window that sticks seasonally was typically not sealed on all faces during fabrication. A properly sealed and finished timber window should operate smoothly throughout the year with no more than 0.5–1 mm seasonal movement. If your existing windows stick, the remedy is to remove the sash, sand back to bare timber on the sticking edge, and reapply full finish.

What is the cost of a hardwood window frame in JB?

A standard timber casement window (900×1,200 mm, Merbau frame, single glazed, oil finish) typically costs RM 1,200–RM 1,800 supplied and installed. Timber louvre panels run approximately RM 800–RM 1,400 per panel. French windows are priced per pair — typically RM 2,500–RM 4,000 for a standard-height pair in Merbau. Do you install fly screens with timber windows?

Yes — we fabricate and install timber-framed fly screen panels for all opening timber window types. Screens are fitted with fibreglass mesh (18×16 mesh, black colour for visibility) in a thin hardwood frame that matches the window species and finish. For louvre windows, we fabricate a clip-on screen frame that fits the full louvre panel opening and can be removed for cleaning.
