Custom Solid-Wood Feature Walls and Timber Cladding in Johor

Walk into a well-designed interior and often there’s one wall doing most of the work. Floor-to-ceiling timber cladding behind a bed. A solid wood panel wall anchoring a living room. Dark, figured hardwood slats running the full width of a restaurant back wall. These aren’t decorative flourishes — they’re the architectural move that gives the whole space its character. Everything else in the room is specified in relation to it.

Table of Contents

At Johor Wood Furniture, feature walls and timber cladding are a natural extension of the structural carpentry work we’ve been doing for years. We already build pergolas, awnings, and house extensions in chengal and balau. Interior wall panels in solid hardwood are, in many respects, the same craft applied to a different surface. The difference is that a feature wall lives in a controlled interior environment, which opens up more species options and allows for a wider range of finish possibilities.

What We Build

Our custom feature walls range from full solid-timber panel systems — where the face is continuous slabs or boards of hardwood — to slatted designs that create depth and shadow play across the wall surface. We also do linear profile cladding, herringbone panel layouts, and geometric arrangements depending on the design direction. Each installation is designed from scratch to suit the specific room, ceiling height, and material brief.

Species for interior wall panels can include suar, chengal, balau, merbau, and on request, reclaimed or recycled timber. Suar is an exceptional choice for feature walls because its wide, flowing grain and natural voids — filled with clear or pigmented epoxy — create a surface that looks genuinely irreplaceable. No two suar panels are identical. Chengal brings a more consistent, refined face suited to contemporary and corporate interiors. Reclaimed timber, where the brief calls for it, introduces a textural history that new-cut wood can’t replicate.

The Installation Process

A solid timber feature wall is not a stick-on product. Proper installation begins with the wall substrate — whether it’s concrete, plasterboard, or brick determines the batten and fixing system we use. We install a full perimeter and field batten frame first, ensuring the face plane is flat and the fixings are anchored into structure. The timber panels or slats are then fixed to this frame, with appropriate expansion gaps built into the layout to accommodate natural wood movement in the interior climate.

We pay particular attention to how the installation finishes at edges, reveals, and ceiling lines. A feature wall that’s beautifully executed across its face but terminates sloppily at the corners or where it meets the ceiling reads as unfinished. We use solid timber return pieces, bespoke trims, and — where the design warrants it — full wrapped reveals so that the installation looks complete from every angle, not just head-on.

Electrical provisions — wall sockets, light switches, recessed lighting niches — are coordinated during the planning stage. We can route panel layouts around existing services or work with your electrician to relocate them before installation begins. Feature walls with concealed LED accent lighting are increasingly requested, and we can accommodate recessed channel routing within the panel depth for clean integration.

Interior vs. Wet Area and Semi-Outdoor Applications

Interior feature walls in air-conditioned or naturally ventilated living spaces are the most straightforward application. The wood is protected from direct moisture and UV, and with appropriate finishing — penetrating oil, matte lacquer, or hard wax oil — the surface is easy to maintain and extremely durable.

Semi-outdoor timber cladding — on covered verandas, alfresco dining areas, or car porch walls — requires more careful species selection and finishing specification. In these applications we typically default to chengal or balau, finished with an exterior-grade penetrating oil and designed with drainage in mind so that any windblown rain doesn’t pool against the face. We’ve completed cladding projects in these conditions that are now several years old and holding up exactly as specified.

We don’t do bathroom or kitchen wet-area timber cladding as a standard offering — these applications require specialist waterproofing details that go beyond standard joinery, and the risk of long-term moisture damage is too high without rigorous waterproofing membrane work behind the timber surface. We’ll refer you to a specialist if that’s your requirement.

Residential and Commercial Projects

Our feature wall and cladding work spans residential renovations, boutique hotel guestrooms and lobbies, restaurant accent walls, and corporate reception areas. The common thread is clients who understand that material quality in a feature piece is not an area to compromise, and who want something that will still look exceptional in fifteen years rather than tired in five.

Lead times vary by project scale — a single residential feature wall can typically be turned around in three to four weeks from design approval. Larger commercial installations with multiple rooms or complex layouts are scheduled project by project.

How long does custom furniture take in Johor Bahru?

Most custom pieces take between two and six weeks depending on the size, the wood selected and how detailed the design is. We confirm an estimated timeline as part of your quotation.

Which wood is best for outdoor furniture in Malaysia?

Chengal and Balau are the top choices for outdoor furniture in Malaysia thanks to their density and natural resistance to moisture, rot and insects. Chengal is the most durable and premium option, while Balau offers excellent weather resistance at a slightly lower cost.
