Overview

Kempas (Koompassia malaccensis) is a large tropical hardwood native to Malaysia and Borneo, highly regarded for its striking reddish-orange colour, exceptional hardness, and impressive strength. Often confused with Red Meranti at first glance, Kempas is significantly denser and harder, making it a premium choice for hardwood flooring, heavy-duty furniture, and structural timber applications where durability under load is essential.

In Johor Bahru’s furniture and construction market, Kempas is commonly used for solid wood flooring planks, staircases, heavy dining tables, and shopfront display counters. Oriental Allure Design works with Kempas for clients who want the aesthetic warmth of a reddish hardwood combined with the robustness needed for high-traffic commercial and residential applications.

Key Features of Kempas Wood

Kempas is a demanding wood to work with, but the results justify the effort. Its combination of hardness, colour, and structural strength make it one of Malaysia’s most prized flooring and heavy furniture timbers.

  • Exceptional Hardness: With a Janka hardness of approximately 1,710 lbf, Kempas is harder than Teak and most Meranti species. This makes it highly resistant to denting and surface wear — critical for flooring in high-traffic areas like corridors, living rooms, and commercial showrooms.
  • Distinctive Reddish Colour: Kempas’s rich orange-red to reddish-brown hue with darker grain streaks gives it a bold, warm appearance that enhances any interior. Over time, it mellows to a deeper reddish-brown tone, gaining character with age.
  • High Load-Bearing Capacity: Kempas’s density and grain structure give it excellent bending and compression strength, making it suitable for heavy furniture, staircases, and structural beams where other timbers would flex or fail under load.
  • Good Dimensional Stability: Once properly kiln-dried, Kempas shows moderate dimensional stability. It performs well as flooring when acclimatised correctly before installation, minimising the expansion and contraction that can cause gaps or cupping over time in Malaysia’s humid climate.
  • Stain & Finish Compatibility: Unlike oily species that reject certain finishes, Kempas accepts stains, lacquers, and varnishes well after proper sanding. This allows it to be finished in a range of tones — from its natural reddish hue to darker walnut or ebony stains for modern interiors.
  • Structural Versatility: Beyond flooring and furniture, Kempas is used for heavy construction timber, railway sleepers, and marine applications. In furniture making, this structural strength means Kempas pieces rarely need reinforcement and stand up to decades of daily use.

Uses & Applications in Johor Bahru

Kempas solid wood flooring is its most popular application in Johor Bahru and wider Malaysia. Homeowners in Bukit Indah, Mount Austin, and Taman Molek choose Kempas flooring for its reddish warmth, hardness, and local availability. Commercial property developers installing retail showrooms, restaurant floors, and hotel lobbies also specify Kempas for its durability under heavy foot traffic and trolley movement.

For furniture, Kempas is used for heavy dining tables, staircases, countertops, and shopfront display counters where weight-bearing capacity matters. Oriental Allure Design has produced custom Kempas dining tables, staircase treads, and commercial display furniture for clients in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. The wood’s bold reddish colour makes a strong statement in feature applications.

Wood Specifications & Grading

Kempas has some unique technical characteristics that furniture makers and contractors should understand before specifying it. Its interlocked, reversing grain makes it challenging to machine, but our experienced craftsmen have the right tools and techniques to handle it.

  • Botanical Name: Koompassia malaccensis
  • Family: Fabaceae
  • Average Density: 750–900 kg/m³
  • Texture: Coarse and uneven
  • Grain: Interlocked — prone to reversing grain
  • Natural Oils: Low natural oils — requires finish protection
  • Workability: Difficult — blunts tools quickly; carbide-tipped tools recommended
  • Finishing: Accepts stains and varnish well; pre-sanding to 150 grit recommended

Kempas contains silica deposits that rapidly blunt standard HSS tool edges. Our workshop uses carbide-tipped saw blades and router bits when working with Kempas. Pre-drilling for screws and nails is essential to prevent splitting. Despite its workability challenges, the finished product is worth the extra care — Kempas surfaces sand to a beautiful, near-smooth finish that takes varnish exceptionally well.

Our Crafting Process

Kempas orders at Oriental Allure Design begin with a careful timber selection process. Our team hand-picks boards for consistent colour and grain, ensuring your finished piece has a uniform appearance. For flooring, we inspect each plank for knots, shakes, or mineral streaks that might affect the installed look.

Fabrication requires our heavy-duty machinery — thickness planers, wide belt sanders, and carbide router tables. For flooring, we mill planks to your specified profile (tongue and groove or click-lock), pre-finish three sides, and package with installation guides. For furniture, we use laminated Kempas construction for wide tabletops to manage movement, secured with solid Kempas edging for a clean appearance.

Care & Maintenance

Kempas flooring should be maintained with a pH-neutral wood floor cleaner applied with a slightly damp mop — never wet mop hardwood floors as standing water causes warping and staining. Apply a maintenance coat of hardwax oil or floor polish every 12–18 months to preserve the surface finish and protect against scuffs. Fit felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratching.

For Kempas furniture, apply a furniture wax or oil finish every 6–12 months to maintain lustre and prevent drying. Avoid placing hot items directly on the surface as Kempas, like all hardwoods, can be scorched. Clean up liquid spills promptly, as standing moisture can darken Kempas and leave tide marks on the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kempas wood good for flooring in Malaysia?

Yes, Kempas is one of the most popular choices for solid hardwood flooring in Malaysia due to its hardness, reddish warmth, and relative affordability compared to imported timbers. It performs well in air-conditioned interiors and resists surface wear in high-traffic areas. Proper acclimatisation before installation is important to prevent post-installation gapping.

How does Kempas compare to Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry) flooring?

Both have similar reddish-orange tones and comparable hardness. Jatoba is slightly harder and more dimensionally stable, but it is imported and significantly more expensive in Malaysia. Kempas is locally sourced, more affordable, and easier to procure in large quantities — making it the practical choice for Malaysian flooring projects.

Can Kempas wood be used outdoors?

Kempas has moderate natural durability (Class 2) and is not recommended for prolonged direct outdoor exposure without treatment. It is better suited to covered outdoor areas, semi-outdoor spaces, and interior applications. For fully exposed outdoor decking, Chengal or Balau are more appropriate choices.

What finish is best for Kempas flooring?

Hardwax oil finishes (like Osmo or Rubio Monocoat) are popular for Kempas flooring as they penetrate the wood and enhance the natural grain without building up a plastic-looking surface film. Oil-modified polyurethane varnish is another option for higher-gloss, more protective finishes. We recommend a matte or satin sheen for residential applications to hide minor scratches and dust.
