Overview
Kapur (Dryobalanops spp.) is a large Malaysian dipterocarp timber notable for its pleasant camphor-like fragrance when freshly cut — the word “kapur” means camphor in Malay. This medium-to-heavy hardwood is prized for its reddish-brown colouration, solid structural strength, and Class 2 natural durability that makes it suitable for both furniture and construction applications. Kapur has been an important part of Malaysia’s timber trade for generations.
In Johor Bahru, Kapur is commonly found in older homes as flooring and structural beams, testament to its proven durability in Malaysia’s climate. Oriental Allure Design uses Kapur for custom flooring, heavy dining tables, structural furniture elements, and renovation timber work where proven local durability and attractive reddish tones are required.

Key Features of Kapur Wood
Kapur combines structural performance with aesthetic warmth, making it a versatile choice for both functional and decorative timber applications in Malaysia.
- Natural Camphor Fragrance: Freshly cut Kapur has a distinctive and pleasant camphor-like aroma that is unique among Malaysian timbers. While the fragrance fades after finishing, it is a tell-tale sign of genuine Kapur and is considered a premium characteristic by many Malaysian timber craftsmen.
- Warm Reddish Colouration: Kapur’s light pinkish-red to reddish-brown tone is warm and inviting, complementing both traditional and contemporary Malaysian interior styles. It deepens to a richer reddish-brown with age and UV exposure, gaining character over decades of use.
- Class 2 Durability: Kapur’s Class 2 natural durability rating means it resists decay and insect attack adequately for covered outdoor applications and indoor use without chemical treatment. It has been used in roof structures, floor beams, and house posts in Malaysian buildings for over a century.
- Good Structural Strength: With a density of 700–800 kg/m³ and good compression and bending strength, Kapur is suitable for structural furniture, beams, and flooring that must bear significant loads over long periods. Older Malaysian shophouses still have Kapur floor beams in excellent condition today.
- Flooring Performance: Kapur’s hardness, density, and reddish colouration make it a popular choice for solid wood flooring. It machines to acceptable flooring profiles, acclimatises reasonably well in Malaysian conditions, and provides a warm, premium floor appearance at a competitive price.
- Local Availability: Kapur is a Malaysian native timber available from local timber yards in Johor Bahru. Sourcing locally reduces costs and delivery times compared to imported species, and supports the local timber supply chain.
Uses & Applications in Johor Bahru
Kapur’s primary use in Johor Bahru is for solid wood flooring in residential and commercial properties. Its reddish tones and hardness make it particularly popular in traditional Malaysian home renovations where owners want to maintain an authentic tropical hardwood appearance. Oriental Allure Design supplies and installs Kapur flooring for homeowners in older JB neighbourhoods like Taman Pelangi and Taman Johor Jaya who are renovating heritage-style homes.
For furniture, Kapur is used for heavy dining tables, work benches, and structural furniture components where density and strength are more important than decorative grain. In construction, Kapur has a strong tradition as structural beams, floor joists, and door frames in Malaysian residential and commercial buildings. Heritage renovation contractors in Johor Bahru occasionally source Kapur from salvage timber dealers to match original building materials in restoration projects.
Wood Specifications & Grading
Kapur’s dipterocarp family membership gives it properties shared with species like Meranti and Balau, but its camphor content and specific density profile set it apart as a distinct working timber.
- Botanical Name: Dryobalanops spp.
- Family: Dipterocarpaceae
- Average Density: 700–800 kg/m³
- Texture: Moderately coarse
- Grain: Interlocked
- Natural Oils: Low to moderate — camphor-like aroma when freshly cut
- Workability: Moderate — interlocked grain requires care; pre-boring for nails recommended
- Finishing: Accepts varnish, lacquer and oil finishes after sanding
When working with Kapur, the interlocked grain requires extra care during planing and moulding. Feed rates should be moderate, and sharp blades are essential to avoid grain tear-out. The camphor content can interfere with some adhesives — we test adhesive compatibility before committing to large glue-up operations with Kapur. Once properly finished, Kapur takes varnish and oil beautifully.
Our Crafting Process
Kapur projects at Oriental Allure Design begin with timber grading — we select boards appropriate for the application, distinguishing structural-grade (with some defects acceptable) from appearance-grade (clear, consistent colour) for furniture and visible flooring work. Kiln-dried Kapur is used for all furniture and flooring to ensure dimensional stability after installation.
For flooring, we mill Kapur to your specified profile and deliver pre-finished or unfinished depending on installation preference. For furniture, our standard joinery workflow applies: milling, joinery cutting, assembly, and finishing. Kapur’s reddish tone looks particularly striking with a clear satin oil finish that enhances the grain without obscuring the natural colour.
Care & Maintenance
Kapur flooring maintenance follows standard hardwood floor care: sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit that can scratch the surface, use a pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner for mopping, and apply a maintenance coat of hardwax oil or floor varnish every 18–24 months. Never wet-mop Kapur flooring as standing water causes staining and swelling.
Kapur furniture requires annual application of furniture oil or wax to maintain its finish and nourish the wood. Wipe spills immediately, especially acidic or alkaline substances that can react with the wood’s natural compounds. For outdoor Kapur applications in covered areas, apply an exterior oil annually to prevent weathering and maintain the warm reddish colour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kapur wood good for flooring in Malaysia?
Yes, Kapur is a well-proven choice for solid wood flooring in Malaysia. Its combination of hardness, reddish warmth, Class 2 durability, and local availability make it a practical and attractive option. Many older Malaysian homes still have original Kapur floors in good condition after 30–40 years — proof of its durability in local conditions.
Why does Kapur wood smell like camphor?
Kapur trees (Dryobalanops spp.) naturally contain camphor oil in their tissues — in fact, they were historically harvested for camphor production before timber became their primary commercial use. The camphor fragrance is pleasant and harmless. It diminishes significantly after the wood is dried and finished.
How does Kapur compare to Kempas for flooring?
Both are popular reddish hardwoods for Malaysian flooring. Kempas is harder (Janka ~1,710 lbf vs Kapur’s ~1,230 lbf) and more wear-resistant for very high-traffic applications. Kapur is slightly easier to work with and has the unique camphor fragrance characteristic. Both are good flooring choices — Kempas for maximum hardness, Kapur for slightly easier maintenance.
Can Kapur wood be used outdoors?
Kapur can be used in covered outdoor applications (Class 2 durability) but is not recommended for direct, fully exposed outdoor use like decking or garden furniture. For covered terraces, carports, or semi-outdoor spaces, Kapur performs adequately with annual oil maintenance. For fully exposed outdoor applications, Chengal or Balau are the appropriate choices.
