How to Care for Hardwood Furniture in a Tropical Climate: The Complete Guide
By KC Chan, Lead Carpenter • June 2026 • ⏱ 10 MIN READ
Overview
Hardwood furniture in Malaysia requires care that is adapted to the specific demands of a tropical climate — high year-round humidity, intense UV radiation, heat and the occasional heavy rain. General furniture care advice written for temperate climates is often misleading or insufficient for Malaysian conditions. This guide is written specifically for hardwood furniture owners in Johor Bahru and across Malaysia.
Details
Understanding Wood Movement in Malaysia
All wood absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air. In Malaysia, the humidity ranges from around 60% during drier periods to over 90% during monsoon season. This range causes wood to expand and contract slightly across the grain. Quality solid hardwood furniture is designed and built to accommodate this movement without cracking, but it means you will sometimes notice very minor seasonal changes in the gap between drawer and cabinet, or the fit of a door. This is normal and not a sign of poor quality.
Indoor Hardwood Furniture Care
For indoor pieces — dining tables, wardrobes, sofas, TV cabinets — the routine is simple. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth. Clean spills immediately with a dry cloth rather than leaving moisture to sit on the surface. Wipe down with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately for deeper cleaning. Apply furniture oil, wax or an appropriate finishing product once or twice a year to maintain the surface and nourish the timber. Keep the furniture away from direct, prolonged sunlight through windows, which causes uneven colour change, and away from air-conditioning vents that blast cold, dry air directly onto the wood, which can cause surface cracking.
Outdoor Hardwood Furniture Care
For outdoor pieces in Chengal or Balau, the routine is slightly more active. Clean two to three times a year with soapy water and a soft brush, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely. Apply exterior hardwood oil annually for fully exposed pieces, or every eighteen months for covered outdoor positions. Check and tighten fixings annually. Clear any debris from gaps between boards or slats that could hold moisture. Bring cushions indoors or store in a weatherproof box during extended heavy rain.
Treating Different Finishes
Oil-finished wood: re-oil with the same type of oil when the surface looks dry or dull. Varnished wood: clean with a mild cleaner, avoid abrasives; re-varnish when the film shows visible wear. Painted wood: clean with soapy water; touch up chips with matching paint promptly to prevent moisture ingress under the paint film. Natural/unfinished outdoor wood: wash and allow to weather; the silver-grey colour is cosmetically only, not structural damage.
Dealing with Common Issues
White water rings on tables: try a light application of petroleum jelly left overnight, or a very fine abrasive polish for lacquered surfaces; oil-finished surfaces can be re-oiled. Minor scratches: sand lightly along the grain with fine-grit paper and re-apply the finish. Mould on outdoor furniture: clean with a dilute bleach-and-water solution (one part bleach, ten parts water), rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before re-oiling. Loose joints: apply wood glue and clamp until cured; solid wood furniture can be repaired repeatedly, unlike veneered alternatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I oil hardwood furniture in Malaysia?
For indoor furniture, once or twice a year is sufficient. For outdoor furniture in direct sun and rain, apply exterior hardwood oil twice a year. For covered outdoor pieces, once a year or when the surface looks dry is adequate.
Should I keep hardwood furniture away from air-conditioning?
Avoid placing furniture directly in the blast of an air-conditioning vent. Rapid, repeated changes between cold-dry and warm-humid air can cause surface cracking. A stable indoor environment — consistent humidity around 50–65% — is ideal for hardwood furniture.
What should I do if mould appears on outdoor furniture?
Clean with a diluted bleach solution (1:10 bleach to water), rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Apply exterior hardwood oil after the furniture is fully dry. Prevent recurrence by ensuring good air circulation around the furniture and cleaning off debris that holds moisture.
Can outdoor hardwood furniture be stored indoors?
It does not need to be stored indoors — Chengal and Balau are built to live outdoors permanently. If you want to store furniture during an extended absence, clean and oil it first. Storing dry, oiled hardwood furniture indoors will not harm it.
