Overview
A custom dining table in Johor Bahru transforms the heart of your home into a piece built specifically for your family, your room and your style. Off-the-shelf dining tables come in a small range of standard sizes that rarely match the exact dimensions of a Malaysian dining room, and they are almost always made from veneered particleboard rather than genuine solid wood. When you commission a bespoke dining table from a local craftsman, you decide the length and width, the wood species, the thickness of the table top, the leg style, the finish and whether you want features such as an extension leaf. In this guide we cover why a custom dining table in solid hardwood is a superior long-term investment, which timber species work best, how to plan the right dimensions for your space, and how to care for the finished piece in Johor Bahru’s tropical climate.

Key Features
- Built to your exact dimensions. Whether you need a compact table for four or a banquet-length piece for twelve, every measurement is yours to specify, so the table fits your room without wasted space around it.
- Genuine solid hardwood throughout. No veneers, no particleboard. A solid Chengal or Balau dining table can be sanded and refinished multiple times, meaning it will outlast your home’s other furnishings by decades.
- Choice of wood species. Chengal for maximum density and outdoor durability, Balau for excellent hardness at a slightly lower price, Teak for its natural oils and beautiful grain, or Mahogany for a warmer, richer indoor tone.
- Custom leg and edge design. Simple straight legs, turned legs, hairpin legs, trestle bases or pedestal — the silhouette of the table is yours to decide, matching your interior theme from industrial to classic to modern.
- Extension leaves available. A drop-leaf or pull-out extension transforms an everyday four-person table into a twelve-seater for gatherings, all within the same footprint.
- Direct factory pricing. No showroom mark-up means a genuinely solid hardwood table is often within reach of a mid-range furniture store budget.
Customization Options & Wood Specs
The most consequential decision is the wood. Chengal is Malaysia’s benchmark hardwood: dense, termite-resistant and suitable for both indoor and outdoor dining tables. Balau shares many of those qualities and is a popular choice for large communal tables in restaurants and open-plan homes. Teak is prized for its natural silica content, which makes it highly resistant to moisture and warping, and its warm honey colour makes it a perennial favourite for indoor dining furniture. Mahogany offers a different palette — a deeper reddish-brown with a fine grain — that suits traditional and transitional interiors.
On top of the wood choice, you control the table’s proportions, which matter enormously in practice. A standard dining chair needs about 60 cm of width per person and around 75 cm of table height; we work with you to translate your seating requirements and room size into the right table footprint. Thickness of the top affects both the visual weight of the piece and its structural integrity; we typically recommend a minimum of 50 mm for tables over 2 metres. Edge profiles, from a simple square edge to a live-edge slab, complete the character of the piece.
- Wood species: Chengal, Balau, Teak, Merbau, Mahogany
- Dimensions: Fully made-to-measure, including extension-leaf versions
- Base: Straight legs, trestle, pedestal or hairpin
- Finish: Natural oil, stain, matte or gloss varnish
Our Process
The process begins with a conversation about how you use your dining room, how many people you typically seat and whether you entertain larger groups, because this shapes the ideal dimensions and whether an extension leaf is worth including. We then discuss wood species and finish, preparing a clear quotation so you understand the cost before committing.
Once agreed, our craftsmen select and prepare the timber, cut the components, join them using solid wood joinery and apply the finish by hand. The finished table is inspected for flatness and squareness before delivery. For larger pieces or restaurant commissions, we coordinate delivery and placement. We communicate via WhatsApp throughout, keeping you informed of progress and expected delivery date.
Care & Maintenance
Solid hardwood dining tables are among the easiest pieces of furniture to maintain. For daily care, wipe down with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately; avoid leaving water sitting on the surface. Use coasters and heat-resistant mats to protect against marks from cups and hot dishes. A good-quality furniture oil or wax, applied two or three times a year, will keep the surface nourished and looking its best.
If the surface develops scratches or dullness over time, light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper followed by a fresh coat of oil restores it completely, which is something that simply cannot be done with a veneered table. In Johor Bahru’s humidity, solid hardwood will move very slightly with the seasons; this is normal and a sign of genuine wood. Proper finishing during manufacture and periodic re-oiling minimises this movement and keeps the table stable and beautiful for decades.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size dining table do I need?
Allow roughly 60 cm of table width per person and at least 90 cm of clear space around the table for chairs to pull out comfortably. For a family of four, a table around 120 x 80 cm works well in most Malaysian dining rooms. We can help calculate the right size based on your room dimensions.
Which wood is best for a dining table in Malaysia?
Teak and Chengal are top choices. Teak has natural oils that resist moisture and minor spills, while Chengal is exceptionally hard and dense. Mahogany is an excellent choice if you prefer a warmer colour tone for an indoor setting.
Can I have a live-edge dining table?
Yes. Live-edge tables preserve the natural shape of the timber slab along one or both long edges, producing a unique organic look. We source suitable slabs and can guide you on the aesthetics and dimensions involved.
How do I protect the dining table surface?
Always use placemats, coasters and a heat mat for hot items. Clean with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Re-oil the surface every six to twelve months. Avoid placing the table in direct sunlight for extended periods to prevent uneven colour change.
