Overview
A solid hardwood timber door makes a statement about a home or building that no hollow-core or glass-fibre door can match. The visual weight, the satisfying solidity when it closes, the warmth of real wood grain — these are qualities that come only from genuine solid timber. In Johor Bahru, where front doors face full tropical sun, heavy rain and high humidity, the choice of timber matters enormously. Chengal, Balau and other dense tropical hardwoods are ideal for exterior doors because their natural durability means they resist the warping, swelling and rot that would affect cheaper materials. For interior doors, a wider range of species is suitable, and the emphasis shifts to grain character and finish quality. This guide covers the options for custom timber doors in Johor Bahru, from grand entrance doors to interior panel doors and sliding barn doors, with guidance on materials and care.

Key Features
- Solid hardwood throughout. Every door we make is solid timber, not hollow core or honeycomb fill, giving it the weight, insulating quality and security that hollow doors cannot provide.
- Naturally weather-resistant exterior doors. Chengal and Balau front doors withstand Johor Bahru’s rain, sun and humidity without warping or swelling the way softwood and hollow-core alternatives do.
- Custom size for any opening. We build doors to non-standard sizes, which is common in older Malaysian homes and commercial buildings where standard door dimensions simply do not fit.
- Any panel design or carving. Simple flat-panel doors, traditional multi-panel designs, louvred sections, carved patterns or mixed materials with glass inserts can all be produced.
- Internal and external hardware coordinated. We advise on appropriate hardware for solid hardwood doors, including handles, locks, hinges and door closers sized for the weight of a genuine hardwood door.
- Feature entrance doors. A custom-designed front door in Chengal or Teak with decorative carved panels creates an impressive first impression for a home or office.
Details & Specs
For exterior doors — front doors, entrance doors and any door exposed to direct weather — Chengal and Balau are the first recommendations. Their density and natural durability mean the door will not warp in the rain or swell in the humidity the way a pine or meranti door might. A thick solid Chengal front door (typically 45–55 mm) also provides excellent acoustic and thermal insulation and a very high level of physical security. Teak is a classic choice for exterior doors where the warm grain and international prestige of the species are part of the design intention.
For interior doors, the range of species broadens. Mahogany is popular for its smooth fine grain and deep colour, making it an excellent choice for panel doors in living rooms and bedrooms. Merbau’s rich reddish-brown suits traditional and transitional interiors. Simpler interior doors in solid Meranti or other hardwoods are also produced where budget is a consideration. Sliding barn doors in solid hardwood are a popular contemporary choice for internal openings where a swing door would be impractical.
- Exterior: Chengal or Balau (natural durability); Teak (premium aesthetic)
- Interior: Mahogany, Merbau, Teak or other hardwoods
- Styles: Flat panel, raised panel, louvre, barn/sliding, carved feature
- Thickness: 45–55 mm exterior; 38–45 mm interior
Our Process
The process for a custom door begins with measuring the opening, discussing the design, the species and the finish, and whether the door will be supplied with a frame. We quote per door with all these elements itemised. Fabrication in our workshop produces a door built to your exact opening size. Hanging and installation can be included or the door can be supplied for installation by your own contractor.
Care & Maintenance
Solid hardwood exterior doors benefit from an annual re-oiling or re-varnishing on the external face to maintain the finish and protect against the intense tropical sun, which is the primary cause of surface degradation in exterior timber. Wipe the door down regularly with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime before it accumulates. Check that the seals around the frame are intact; good sealing prevents water ingress at the edges and keeps the door operating smoothly through seasonal humidity changes.
Interior hardwood doors require little maintenance: occasional dusting and a wipe with a slightly damp cloth. If the surface becomes dull, a light buff with furniture wax or oil restores the appearance. Check hinges annually and tighten if loose. Adjust the strike plate if the door stops latching cleanly due to seasonal wood movement.
FAQ
What wood is best for a front door in Johor Bahru?
Chengal is the best choice for a front door facing full tropical exposure — its Class 1 natural durability means it resists warping, swelling and rot in the rain and heat. Balau and Teak are also excellent exterior door timbers.
How thick should a solid hardwood front door be?
A minimum of 45 mm for exterior doors; 50–55 mm is common for front doors where security and acoustic insulation are important. Thicker doors also feel more substantial and are harder to force.
Can you make custom-sized doors for old Malaysian homes?
Yes. Non-standard door sizes are common in older Malaysian homes and commercial buildings. We build to the exact measurements of your opening, which is one of the primary advantages of a custom approach over buying a standard-size door.
Do you install the doors as well?
Yes. We offer supply-only or supply-and-install depending on your preference. Installation includes hanging the door on correct heavy-duty hinges sized for solid hardwood and adjusting for a correct fit and smooth operation.
