Overview

Chengal decking in Johor Bahru is the premium choice for outdoor decking surfaces that need to perform for decades in Malaysia’s tropical climate. Whether you are building a garden terrace, a pool deck, a walkway, a covered patio floor or a raised deck, Chengal hardwood boards provide a beautiful natural surface that is dense enough to resist denting, naturally resistant to moisture and rot without chemical treatment, and tough enough to withstand the heavy footfall, UV radiation and rain of a Johor Bahru outdoor space. This guide covers everything you need to know about Chengal decking: the properties that make it the benchmark choice for outdoor decking in Malaysia, how it is installed correctly, what maintenance it needs, and how it compares to the alternatives.

Key Features

  • Class 1 natural durability. Chengal does not need chemical preservative treatment to last outdoors in Malaysian conditions. Its natural compounds resist moisture, rot and termites that would destroy softwood decking rapidly.
  • Exceptional hardness underfoot. The high Janka hardness of Chengal means it resists surface denting from furniture legs, foot traffic and dropped items, maintaining an attractive surface appearance for many years.
  • Dimensionally stable. Properly dried Chengal moves less than most timbers in response to humidity changes, which means well-laid Chengal decking maintains its flatness and tight board spacing over time.
  • Beautiful natural appearance. Golden-brown and warm, freshly finished Chengal decking looks outstanding in any outdoor setting. It weathers to an attractive silver-grey if left untreated, which many homeowners prefer.
  • Anti-slip profiles available. Grooved anti-slip Chengal decking boards provide safe footing around pools, on covered terraces and on garden walkways.
  • Supply and installation. We supply Chengal decking boards and carry out professional installation in Johor Bahru and the surrounding area.

Details & Specs

Chengal decking boards are available in several standard widths, with 90 mm and 120 mm being the most popular for residential decking. A board width of 90 mm produces a finer, more textured visual pattern, while 120–145 mm boards give a more expansive, contemporary look. Board thickness is typically 25 mm for a surface deck over a structural frame, or 38 mm where longer spans between joists are needed. The joist spacing and structural frame beneath the deck are as important as the surface boards, and we design both as part of every decking project.

Gap spacing between boards (typically 5–8 mm) allows water to drain and air to circulate, which keeps the underside of the boards dry and extends the life of the deck. We fix boards with stainless steel screws or hidden clip fixings, both of which resist the corrosion that would cause regular steel screws to fail and stain the deck surface within a few years in Johor Bahru’s climate.

  • Board widths: 90 mm, 120 mm, 145 mm
  • Profile: Flat top, anti-slip grooved, or radius-edge
  • Fixings: Stainless steel screws or hidden clip system
  • Finish: Natural, exterior oil or UV-stable deck coating

Our Process

A decking project begins with a site visit to measure the area, assess the substrate (ground, concrete slab or raised frame), discuss board width and direction, and agree on the finish and edge detail. We prepare a quotation covering materials and installation. Once confirmed, we fabricate any necessary framing, source and deliver the Chengal boards, and carry out professional installation, ensuring the deck is level, properly drained and correctly fixed.

We also supply replacement boards and undertake repair and restoration work on existing Chengal and Balau decks, including cleaning, oiling and replacing damaged boards. Contact us via WhatsApp with photos for a restoration assessment.

Care & Maintenance

New Chengal decking should receive its first oil treatment as soon as possible after installation to seal the surface and establish protection. Clean the deck quarterly or more often if it is under trees or near a pool: sweep, wash with soapy water, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry before re-oiling. Annual oiling is sufficient for a covered deck; twice yearly for a fully exposed deck in direct sun and rain.

If the deck is allowed to weather to silver-grey, an annual wash and check of fixings is the minimum maintenance required. Chengal does not rot or deteriorate structurally without oil; the oil treatment is about maintaining the colour and surface finish. Inspect fixings annually and replace any that show corrosion. Clear drainage gaps of leaves and debris that can hold moisture. With these steps, a properly installed Chengal deck will look and perform well for twenty years and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Chengal decking last?

A properly installed and maintained Chengal deck in Johor Bahru will last twenty to thirty years and often significantly longer. The exceptional natural durability of Chengal means the boards themselves rarely fail before the structural frame beneath them, and the boards can be replaced individually if one is damaged without replacing the whole deck.

Does Chengal decking need to be sealed or treated?

No chemical preservative treatment is necessary — Chengal’s natural durability means it does not rot even without treatment. An exterior oil is recommended to maintain the warm golden colour, but untreated Chengal decking will weather safely to silver-grey over time.

How much gap should there be between decking boards?

A gap of 5–8 mm between boards is standard practice. This allows adequate drainage and air circulation beneath the boards while being small enough to prevent heels and chair legs from catching. We set gaps consistently during installation.

Can Chengal decking be installed over concrete?

Yes. Chengal decking can be laid over a concrete slab using a treated timber or composite batten framework that elevates the boards slightly and allows drainage. This is a common installation method for balconies and patio areas.
