Overview: The Role of Timber in Malaysian Mosque Architecture
Timber has been central to Malaysian mosque architecture and furnishing for centuries. The traditional Malay mosque — the rumah ibadat — was built entirely from timber, with intricately carved panels on the mihrab, hand-turned columns supporting the prayer hall roof, and a mimbar crafted from the finest available hardwood as the focal point of the Friday prayer. While modern mosques in Johor Bahru are increasingly built in concrete and dressed stone, the tradition of commissioning significant timber elements — a bespoke hardwood mimbar, carved Quranic inscription panels, solid timber doors, and handcrafted rehal — continues as an expression of the community’s respect for their place of worship and their craft heritage.
At Oriental Allure Design, we design and fabricate custom hardwood mimbar, rehal, Quran storage cabinets, and other ceremonial and functional timber joinery for mosques and surau across Johor Bahru. Each piece is fabricated in our Masai workshop from certified Malaysian hardwood — principally Chengal and Merbau — by craftsmen who understand both the technical requirements of fine joinery and the cultural significance of the pieces they are creating.

Custom Hardwood Mimbar: The Centrepiece of the Friday Prayer
The mimbar is the raised platform and staircase from which the khatib delivers the Friday khutbah (sermon) — it is the most important single piece of furniture in any mosque. A well-designed mimbar in solid hardwood with carved Islamic decorative panels is a piece of craftsmanship that will serve the community for generations and is often the defining visual statement of a mosque interior. We design custom mimbar to the commissioning mosque committee’s brief — incorporating the mosque’s name, the founding year, and any specific decorative motifs or inscriptions requested by the committee.
A standard custom Chengal mimbar from Oriental Allure Design comprises: a solid hardwood base platform (raised 150–200 mm above prayer hall floor level on a solid plinth or three steps); a staircase with handrail ascending to the khatib’s standing position; a front panel with carved or CNC-routed geometric Islamic pattern; a back panel or arch framing the khatib’s position; and a hardwood canopy above (traditional Malaysian mimbar style) or an open arch (modern style). The khatib’s standing position includes a solid hardwood lectern at the appropriate height for reading from. All surfaces are finished in non-toxic water-based satin varnish to preserve the natural timber colour.
Interior Joinery & Fittings for Mosques
- Rehal (Quran Stand): The traditional folding Quran stand — a pair of X-shaped hardwood boards that fold flat for storage and open to support the Quran at the correct reading angle. We fabricate rehal in Merbau or Chengal with a smooth, polished finish, in individual pieces for use by jemaah or as fixed stands mounted at specific positions in the prayer hall. Custom sizes from children’s rehal (small prayer school versions) to large congregational rehal for the imam’s station.
- Quran Almari (Cabinet): Solid hardwood Quran storage cabinets — a row of individual cubbyhole compartments (typically 300 mm wide × 300 mm tall × 250 mm deep) for storing mosque Quran copies between prayers. Cabinets are wall-mounted or freestanding, with glazed or solid hardwood doors, and can include a labelling system for Quran tracking. Our standard Quran almari holds 20–30 copies in a single unit and can be specified in multiple units for larger mosques.
- Imam Chair: A solid hardwood ceremonial chair for the imam — positioned facing the jemaah during non-prayer ceremonial occasions. Designed with dignity and appropriate visual weight — typically a high-backed chair with carved panel inserts in a matching style to the mimbar.
- Carved Wall Panels: Solid hardwood wall panels with Quranic inscriptions (selected verses of appropriate significance, reviewed by the mosque committee) in Arabic calligraphy — CNC-routed to a depth of 5–8 mm and highlighted with gilded or painted background for maximum legibility. These panels are typically positioned above the mihrab arch or at the entrance to the prayer hall.
- Donation Box Stand & Signage: Solid hardwood donation box stands, notice boards, and directional signage — completing the hardwood language throughout the mosque facility.
Design Traditions: Johor, Malay Archipelago, and Contemporary Islamic Styles
Malaysian mosque joinery draws from a rich tradition of regional design. The Johor style reflects the royal court aesthetic of the Johor Sultanate — refined, dignified, and restrained in ornament, with emphasis on the quality of the timber and the precision of the joinery over elaborate decoration. The Malay Archipelago tradition — shared with Indonesian (Javanese, Sumatran) and Bruneian mosque architecture — features more elaborate carved geometric and floral panels derived from the indigenous ukiran Melayu woodcarving tradition. Contemporary Islamic design draws from global Islamic architecture — Moroccan geometric tile patterns translated into timber lattice, Ottoman-influenced arch profiles, and modern geometric compositions that achieve Islamic pattern complexity through CNC precision. We discuss design direction with each mosque committee and can prepare design reference boards showing all three approaches before the committee makes their selection.
Wood Species for Mosque Interior Joinery
Mosque interior joinery — mimbar, rehal, Quran cabinets, imam chairs — is in a temperature-controlled or naturally ventilated interior environment. The durability criteria are less demanding than outdoor furniture, but the quality and machining precision requirements are higher. We specify Chengal for premium commissions where the natural colour and grain of Malaysia’s most prestigious hardwood are part of the visual statement. Chengal’s warm golden-brown to reddish colour deepens beautifully with age, giving a mimbar commission a visual character that improves over decades of service. Merbau is our standard specification — excellent machining quality for crisp carved panel details, a rich warm colour, and good stability in air-conditioned interiors. Balau is used for structural elements — the heavy base platform of the mimbar and the structural components of large Quran almari — where its high density and compressive strength provide stability.
Our Mosque Joinery Process
- Committee Consultation: We meet with the mosque AJK (committee) to understand the design requirements, budget, timeline, and any specific prescriptions from the mosque’s religious authority regarding style, inscriptions, or dimensions.
- Design Development: We prepare 2–3 design options for the mimbar (or other commission) in SketchUp 3D with detailed panel illustrations. Design options are presented to the committee for discussion and selection.
- Inscription Review: For any Quranic inscriptions, the proposed text is reviewed and approved by a qualified ustaz before being committed to the carving file. We do not proceed with inscription carving without this religious review step.
- Fabrication: Production in our Masai workshop. Structural joinery is completed first, then decorative panels are CNC-routed and hand-finished, then the complete piece is assembled, checked, and finished.
- Delivery & Installation: Delivered and installed in the mosque by our team. We coordinate installation timing to minimise disruption to the prayer schedule.
Care & Maintenance
Interior mosque joinery in a naturally ventilated prayer hall requires annual light dusting with a soft cloth and occasional wiping with a very slightly damp cloth for any marks. For oiled or hardwax-oil-finished pieces, apply a maintenance coat of non-toxic hardwax oil every 3–5 years. For varnished pieces, touch up any chips or scratches with matching varnish immediately. The mimbar should be inspected annually by a trained joiner for any loose joints or checking in the timber — early intervention prevents small issues becoming structural ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to fabricate a custom hardwood mimbar?
A custom Chengal mimbar (3-step design with carved front panels, canopy, and imam lectern) typically takes 6–10 weeks from design approval to delivery. This lead time reflects the complexity of the joinery, the carving process, and the multiple finishing stages required for a ceremonial piece of this significance. We advise mosque committees to contact us at least 3 months before the target installation date for new mosque opening projects.
Can the mimbar design include specific Quranic verses or the mosque’s name?
Yes — customising the mimbar with the mosque’s name, founding year, and selected Quranic verses is standard practice and we welcome the creative brief this represents. We work with the committee to position inscriptions appropriately on the front panel, the canopy fascia, or the arch back panel. All Arabic calligraphy is reviewed by a qualified ustaz before carving to ensure accuracy and appropriateness. We use established Arabic calligraphic styles — Thuluth, Naskh, or Kufic — selected in discussion with the committee.
What is the price of a custom hardwood mimbar in Malaysia?
A custom Merbau mimbar (3-step design, carved front panel, canopy, imam lectern, water-based satin varnish finish, delivered and installed) typically costs RM 12,000–RM 22,000 depending on the complexity of the carving and size of the mimbar. A premium Chengal commission with hand-carved panels and gilded inscriptions runs RM 25,000–RM 45,000. WhatsApp +60 16-717 9573 to discuss your mosque’s specific requirements and receive a design proposal and price estimate.
Do you work with mosque renovation projects?
Yes — mosque renovation is as significant a part of our community facility work as new mosque supply. Replacing a worn or dated mimbar, installing new Quran almari, refurbishing locker room benches, or adding new outdoor seating in the mosque compound are all projects we handle regularly. Contact us with photos and dimensions of your existing facility and we will prepare a renovation proposal within 1 week.
