Overview: Hardwood Awnings as Both Protection and Architecture
In Malaysia’s equatorial climate, a well-designed awning or canopy frame is not a luxury — it is practical architecture. Awnings protect windows from direct rain ingress, shade glass from heat gain, shelter entrances during downpours, and define the architectural character of a building’s facade. When that awning frame is fabricated from solid hardwood rather than aluminium extrusions or powder-coated steel, it becomes a genuine design statement — warm, natural, and crafted with a permanence that metal canopies cannot match.
At Oriental Allure Design, we fabricate custom timber awning and canopy frames in Johor Bahru from Merbau, Chengal, and Balau — species proven in Malaysian outdoor conditions. Our awnings are structural: designed to handle the dead load of polycarbonate or glass infill panels plus wind uplift loads calculated for Johor’s coastal wind zones. Every frame is mortise-and-tenon jointed at all connections, hot-dip galvanised or stainless fastener sets, and finished with UV-resistant exterior coatings that perform in direct sunlight.
This guide covers the types of hardwood awnings available, species selection, structural requirements, and what to expect from a custom timber awning project in Johor Bahru.

Types of Timber Awnings We Fabricate
- Window Awning: A small projecting canopy over a single window or a run of windows. Typically 300–500 mm projection with a polycarbonate or zinc infill. Prevents rain from entering louvred windows and reduces solar heat gain through glass. The most common awning type for JB landed homes.
- Entrance Canopy: A larger structure over a front door or porch entrance — typically 1,200–2,000 mm projection and spanning the full door width. Can be flat, mono-pitch, or gabled. The hardwood frame becomes a key architectural feature of the facade, especially when combined with decorative timber battens in the fascia.
- Walkway Canopy: A continuous covered walkway connecting buildings, car park to office entrance, or linking detached structures. Timber posts support a mono-pitch or gabled roof — creates an impressive shaded arrival experience used in resort hotels and high-end residential developments.
- Shopfront Awning: A projecting canopy over a retail or F&B shopfront, typically with open timber battens or a polycarbonate infill. Provides shade for outdoor seating while reinforcing the brand aesthetic of restaurants and cafes that want a natural, artisan identity.
- Open Timber Canopy: No solid roof infill — just the hardwood structural frame with evenly-spaced 50×25 mm battens across the top. Creates filtered shade and dappled light. Popular for outdoor dining areas, pool decks, and zen garden pathways where partial shade is preferred over full weatherproofing.
Wood Species for Awning Frames
Awning frames are fully exposed to weather — rain, UV, and condensation. Only Class 1 and Class 2 durability timbers should be used without preservative treatment. We use three primary species:
Merbau is our default awning species — it combines high durability (Class 2, some sources Class 1), good machining characteristics, and a warm appearance at a competitive price. Its natural extractives resist moisture ingress and fungal attack. Chengal is specified for coastal locations (facing the sea or within 500 m of the Straits) where chloride-rich marine air accelerates weathering — Chengal’s silica content and resin system provide Class 1 durability in these demanding conditions. Balau is used for structural posts and large-section members where high density and compressive strength are required.
Structural Considerations for Timber Awnings in Malaysia
Awning frames in Malaysia must be designed to resist three load conditions: the dead load of the roof infill material, wind uplift under Johor’s design wind speed (typically 25–30 m/s for residential), and seismic load (minor in Peninsular Malaysia but considered in JKR guidelines for structures attached to permanent buildings). Our awning frames are designed with the following structural principles:
- Wall Anchor: All awning frames are fixed to RC beams or solid masonry with M10 316-grade stainless expanding bolts at minimum 600 mm centres. Fixing into hollow block or plaster only is not accepted — we identify the structural element behind the wall surface during site survey.
- Post Section: Freestanding canopy posts are minimum 100×100 mm hardwood section, or 150×150 mm for spans exceeding 3 metres.
- Rafter Spacing: Rafters are spaced at maximum 600 mm centres to limit deflection of polycarbonate or glass infill under point load (e.g., a person leaning on the roof).
- Connections: All structural connections use stainless coach screws (minimum 10 mm diameter) in addition to glued mortise-and-tenon joints. Metal joist hangers are used at purlin-to-beam connections where timber section does not allow full mortise depth.
- Slope: Minimum 5° pitch on all solid-infill awning roofs to ensure positive drainage — pooling water accelerates timber decay even in durable species.
Our Timber Awning Fabrication & Installation Process
- Site Survey: We measure the installation location, identify structural anchoring points, assess the wall construction, and photograph the facade for design context.
- Structural Design: We prepare a structural sketch showing member sizes, connection details, and anchor bolt layout. For commercial projects, a PE-stamped structural drawing can be provided if required by your Majlis Perbandaran.
- Fabrication: Frame members are machined and jointed in our Masai workshop. All mortise-and-tenon joints are pre-cut and test-assembled before finishing.
- Pre-Finishing: The disassembled frame is sanded and given a full primer coat plus two finish coats before assembly on-site. This ensures all surfaces — including joint faces — are sealed against moisture.
- Installation: Our team installs the frame on-site, fixes to structural anchors, installs infill panels or battens, applies silicone perimeter seal, and applies a touch-up coat to any areas disturbed during installation.
Care & Maintenance
Timber awnings are in full weather exposure and require annual maintenance to achieve maximum service life. Every 12 months, inspect all exposed timber surfaces for checking or finish breakdown and apply one coat of teak oil or touch-up varnish. Check all wall anchor bolts annually for any signs of movement or rust staining. Clear debris from the roof valley and any gutter channels — blocked drainage is the primary cause of water pooling and accelerated timber decay in awning frames. Every 5 years, carry out a full strip and recoat.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit for a timber awning in Johor Bahru?
Minor awnings (typically under 1.5 m projection and not encroaching on the site boundary or public ROW) generally do not require planning approval from MBJB or MPJBT. However, larger canopies, those attached to commercial properties, or those projecting over a shared boundary may require a minor works permit. We advise checking with your local authority (MBJB, MPJBT, or MPJB) based on your specific location. We can prepare the as-built drawings typically required for permit submissions.
How long does a timber awning last in Johor’s climate?
A properly designed Merbau awning frame with annual maintenance can last 15–25 years. Chengal in the same exposure can last 30–40 years. The critical factors are adequate pitch for drainage, proper wall anchor sealing to prevent water ingress at the fixing points, and annual oiling of all exposed timber. Awnings without adequate slope that allow water to pond typically show decay within 5–7 years even with durable species.
Can a timber canopy support a heavy roof material like clay tiles or concrete tiles?
Yes, with appropriate structural sizing. Clay tiles weigh approximately 40–50 kg/m² — significantly more than polycarbonate (1.2–2.5 kg/m²) or zinc sheeting (4–6 kg/m²). For tile-loaded canopies, rafters must be upsized (typically to 100×50 mm at 450 mm centres) and wall anchors must be engineered to handle the increased dead and wind load. We specify member sizes based on actual roof material weight and span for every project.
What is the cost of a timber awning in JB?
A simple window awning (single window, 900 mm wide × 600 mm projection, polycarbonate infill) typically costs RM 800–RM 1,500 supplied and installed. An entrance canopy (2,400 mm wide × 1,200 mm projection) in Merbau with polycarbonate runs RM 2,500–RM 4,500. Larger walkway canopies are priced per linear metre — contact us at +60 16-717 9573 for a detailed quote based on your specific project.
