Overview
Rubberwood (Hevea brasiliensis) is Malaysia’s most widely used plantation timber, harvested from rubber trees at the end of their latex-producing life — typically after 25–30 years. Rather than burning or discarding these trees, Malaysian furniture manufacturers discovered in the 1980s that Rubberwood produces excellent timber for indoor furniture: medium-hard, even-grained, dimensionally stable, and accepting of virtually any finish. Today, Rubberwood furniture from Malaysia is exported worldwide.
For Johor Bahru homeowners and businesses seeking cost-effective custom furniture from real solid wood — not MDF or particleboard — Rubberwood is the most practical entry point. At Oriental Allure Design, we craft custom Rubberwood kitchen tables, dining sets, study desks, children’s furniture, and office furniture that deliver genuine solid wood quality at a budget-conscious price. Rubberwood also has eco-friendly credentials: it is a plantation wood that recycles agricultural waste.

Key Features of Rubberwood
Rubberwood’s success in the global furniture market is no accident. It combines practical performance characteristics that make it ideal for mass and custom furniture production.
- Exceptional Workability: Rubberwood works easily with all hand and power tools. It cuts cleanly, sands smoothly, drills without splitting, and holds screws and nails reliably — even near edges where other hardwoods split. This workability translates to faster production and lower labour costs.
- Excellent Finish Compatibility: After proper kiln-drying and fungicide treatment (required to prevent bluing and mould), Rubberwood accepts paint, stain, lacquer, varnish, and oil finishes with excellent results. Its plain, even grain makes it ideal for solid-colour painted finishes and for staining to mimic more expensive species.
- Dimensional Stability: Plantation-grown and kiln-dried Rubberwood is among the most dimensionally stable timbers for indoor use in Malaysia’s climate. Consistent moisture content at processing means minimal movement after installation — critical for cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and table tops that must remain flat.
- Eco-Friendly Credentials: Rubberwood is a genuine sustainability story. Every Rubberwood piece utilises timber that would otherwise be discarded or burned as agricultural waste from the rubber plantation industry. No old-growth forest is harvested for Rubberwood — it comes entirely from managed, replanted plantations.
- Consistent Quality: Unlike jungle timbers where quality varies between trees and regions, plantation Rubberwood is grown under controlled conditions, producing consistent colour, density, and grain characteristics from batch to batch. This consistency simplifies colour matching for large furniture projects.
- Value for Money: At RM 6–12 per board foot, Rubberwood is the most affordable real hardwood option in Malaysia. For budget-conscious clients who want genuine solid wood over engineered boards, Rubberwood delivers superior durability, repairability, and longevity compared to MDF or particleboard furniture at competitive prices.
Uses & Applications in Johor Bahru
In Johor Bahru, Rubberwood is the dominant timber for budget and mid-range custom furniture. Kitchen tables, children’s bedroom sets, study desks, bookshelf units, and dining chairs in Rubberwood offer solid wood quality accessible to most households. Schools, tuition centres, and small offices regularly commission Oriental Allure Design for custom Rubberwood desks, tables, and storage units that need to be functional, durable, and cost-effective.
Rubberwood is also used extensively for painted furniture — kitchen cabinet doors, custom TV consoles, and wardrobes where a smooth painted finish is desired. Its excellent paint adhesion and dimensional stability make it ideal for furniture that needs to match a specific interior colour scheme. We have produced full apartment fit-outs in painted Rubberwood for developers in Iskandar Puteri and Tebrau who want solid wood quality without Meranti or Teak pricing.
Wood Specifications & Grading
Understanding Rubberwood’s technical limitations alongside its strengths helps set realistic expectations for your project.
- Botanical Name: Hevea brasiliensis
- Family: Euphorbiaceae
- Average Density: 560–640 kg/m³
- Texture: Medium, even
- Grain: Straight to slightly wavy
- Natural Oils: Low — excellent finish adhesion after fungicide treatment
- Workability: Excellent — easy with all tools, holds screws well
- Finishing: Accepts all finishes — paint, stain, lacquer, oil
One important consideration: freshly harvested Rubberwood must be kiln-dried and treated with a fungicide immediately after milling, as it is highly susceptible to blue-stain fungi and mould if stored wet. All Rubberwood we use at Oriental Allure Design is purchased from reputable suppliers who guarantee kiln-dried, treated timber. We do not use green or improperly treated Rubberwood in any of our furniture.
Our Crafting Process
Rubberwood furniture orders at Oriental Allure Design follow the same quality process as our premium timber work. We begin with a detailed design brief, produce technical drawings for approval, and fabricate using properly kiln-dried, treated Rubberwood from our regular suppliers. Despite Rubberwood’s reputation as a budget timber, we apply the same joinery standards — mortise-and-tenon, dovetails, or pocket screw construction depending on the application.
For painted Rubberwood furniture, we apply a grain filler and two coats of primer before topcoating with your chosen colour. This ensures a smooth, even surface without the grain telegraphing through the paint film. For natural-finish Rubberwood — stained or oiled — we sand to 180-grit and apply a sealer before the final topcoat. All Rubberwood furniture is inspected for squareness, fit, and finish quality before delivery.
Care & Maintenance
Indoor Rubberwood furniture is easy to maintain. Dust with a soft cloth weekly and apply a furniture wax or polish every 6 months. For painted Rubberwood, use a mild all-purpose cleaner diluted in water for cleaning and dry immediately. Avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the paint film.
Keep Rubberwood furniture away from outdoor exposure — it is not durable against moisture, rot, or insects when exposed to the elements. In high-humidity rooms like kitchens and bathrooms, ensure adequate ventilation to prevent moisture absorption over time. If a piece develops a minor scratch or chip, touch-up is straightforward — Rubberwood accepts repairs well and touch-up stains or paint match easily.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rubberwood real hardwood?
Yes, Rubberwood is a genuine hardwood — it comes from a broadleaf deciduous tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and is botanically classified as a hardwood. It is harder than some tropical species but softer than Chengal or Balau. While it is not a “prestige” timber, it is real solid wood that performs excellently for indoor furniture applications.
Is Rubberwood durable for dining tables?
Yes, Rubberwood is adequately durable for indoor dining tables. With a Janka hardness of ~950 lbf, it resists daily use scratches and dents reasonably well. Apply a hard-wearing topcoat finish (polyurethane or conversion varnish) for maximum dining surface durability. Avoid placing hot items directly on the surface and use placemats to protect the finish.
Does Rubberwood furniture have a rubber smell?
No — properly processed, kiln-dried Rubberwood does not have a rubber smell. The latex has been fully depleted by the time the tree is harvested, and the kiln-drying process eliminates any residual organic compounds. Finished Rubberwood furniture is odour-neutral.
Can Rubberwood be used outdoors in Malaysia?
Rubberwood is not suitable for outdoor use in Malaysia’s climate. It has limited natural durability against moisture and insects when exposed to rain and humidity. For outdoor furniture, choose Chengal, Balau, Merbau, or Teak — all far superior for outdoor applications. Rubberwood should be kept indoors or in covered, dry spaces.
