What is Chengal Wood? Properties, Uses & Price Guide for Malaysia
By KC Chan, Lead Carpenter • June 2026 • ⏱ 10 MIN READ
Overview
Chengal wood (Neobalanocarpus heimii) is Malaysia’s most prized native hardwood, valued for centuries for its exceptional natural durability, density and resistance to decay and insects in tropical conditions. If you have been quoted Chengal for outdoor furniture, decking, fencing or structural timber in Johor Bahru and want to understand exactly what you are buying and whether it is worth the premium price, this guide answers every question.
Details
What is Chengal?
Chengal is a Malaysian hardwood species from the family Dipterocarpaceae, found primarily in the lowland and hill forests of Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. It is classified as a very heavy hardwood with a density of approximately 900–1,050 kg/m³ and a Class 1 natural durability rating — the highest possible — meaning it is highly resistant to decay, rot and insect attack without any preservative treatment.
Properties of Chengal Wood
The key properties that make Chengal exceptional for outdoor and structural applications are its density, hardness and natural durability. Its Janka hardness is among the highest of any Malaysian commercial timber. The grain is typically straight to slightly interlocked, producing a moderately fine texture with a characteristic golden-brown to reddish-brown colour that deepens with age. It is difficult to work with ordinary tools because of its density, but it produces excellent results when properly machined and finished.
Best Uses for Chengal
Chengal excels in applications that demand long-term outdoor durability: garden furniture, outdoor dining sets, pool decking, fencing, pergola and gazebo structures, timber bridges, marine piling and traditional Malay stilt-house construction. For indoor applications, it makes an exceptional dining table, kitchen counter or feature wall where a very hard, durable surface is the priority. It is not typically the first choice for delicate indoor furniture where a finer, lighter grain is preferred.
Chengal vs Balau vs Teak
Chengal sits at the top of the durability hierarchy for Malaysian outdoor timbers. Balau is close behind — almost as durable and often slightly less expensive — and is excellent for most outdoor applications. Teak is an internationally recognised benchmark timber but is less dense than Chengal and less naturally durable in the specific context of Malaysia’s tropical outdoor environment. For Malaysian outdoor furniture, Chengal and Balau are the local specialists; Teak is the international generalist.
Price of Chengal Wood in Johor Bahru
Chengal commands a premium price because of its limited natural supply (it is not a fast-growing species and is increasingly protected), its exceptional properties, and the difficulty of working it. Finished Chengal furniture and decking will cost noticeably more than comparable pieces in Merbau, Mahogany or imported timbers. However, when the cost is spread across the thirty to fifty year lifespan of a quality Chengal piece, the cost per year of service is lower than for cheaper alternatives that need more frequent replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Chengal protected in Malaysia?
Chengal is on the restricted timber list in several Malaysian states because of overharvesting concerns. Legally sourced Chengal comes with documentation of origin. We source responsibly and can provide information on timber origin for commissioned pieces.
How heavy is Chengal furniture?
Very heavy. Its density of 900–1,050 kg/m³ means a solid Chengal dining table is noticeably heavier than similar-sized tables in Mahogany or Teak. This is a direct expression of quality.
Can Chengal be used indoors?
Yes. Chengal makes excellent indoor furniture, particularly dining tables, kitchen counters and feature pieces where a very hard, durable surface is wanted. Its colour and grain are also attractive for indoor use.
What does Chengal look like?
Fresh Chengal has a golden-brown to light reddish-brown colour with a moderately fine texture and slightly interlocked grain. It darkens and develops depth over time with oil or use.
